This is sort of Baltimore related. John Allen Muhammad (the "Beltway Sniper") had his federal Habeas Corpus petition rejected by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond last week. This means that Virginia can now seek a death warrant for him, and unless the US Supreme Court agrees to hear his case he is out of legal options.

Nope, I just know there's no point in asking you to keep your comments civil or appropriate, or even remotely relevant to any discussion on this blog. You may not have spent much of your time outside of the cellblock (or loony bin) visiting blogs, but most reputable ones have minimum standards for commentary to ensure that loudmouth, racist homophobes like you don't just take over (as they seem to love the anonymity of the internet) or, in your case, spam multiple inflammatory comments across the board.

I'm not aware of any racist comments by Mel, but I am aware of ones that you've made, like when you talked about how the "negroes" (your word, not mine) were causing all the problems in Baltimore - remember that one?

ReplyDeleteAs for you, Cham, I don't know if the shift from posting racist comments yourself to calling everyone else racist is genuine or a case of "she doth protest too much," and I don't really care. I'm always glad to see people mend their ways, even if you seem to be a bit too eager to call everyone and everything racist.
I think you, Mel, ppatin, and many, many others, with whom I frequently (or even usually) don't agree often have interesting, valid points and take the time to come up with informative things to share. And even if we don't all share opinions or viewpoints, I appreciate it that we're usually a relatively civil group.
I know, however, that a number of former regulars to this blog dropped out because of people like TP (not TP himself, as he's a relatively new poster) and the nature and quality of some of the discussions on here, and that's a shame.

ReplyDeleteI sure as hell wouldn't want to live there! I'm sure we're all familiar with the famous chewing gum ban in Singapore. Well, that ban has been modified as of 2004, to the point that now, you can actually buy gum as long as it contains calcium lactate or nicotine... and you get it from a dentist or pharmacist... AND they take down your name, as required by law:
"These chewing gums can only be sold in pharmacies, and consumers must provide name and ID. Pharmacists who sell the gum without collecting the required information can be fined up to $2,940 USD and jailed for two years. The penalties for violating restrictions on chewing gum in Singapore, such as fines, Corrective Work Orders, and jail time, are often considered severe by outsiders. Similar fineable activities include spitting in public and not flushing public toilets."
Sounds like a real paradise to me!
And, ppatin, I believe you've actually called for reforms of our drug laws (specifically marijuana) - here's how they do things in Singapore:
"The Misuse of Drugs Act is a national drug control law classifying substances into three categories, Classes A, B, and C. ... The statute's penal provisions are draconian by most nations' standards, providing for long terms of imprisonment, caning, and capital punishment. The law creates a presumption of trafficking for certain threshold amounts, e.g. 30 grams of cannabis. It also creates a presumption that a person possesses drugs if he possesses the keys to a premises containing the drugs, and that "Any person found in or escaping from any place or premises which is proved or presumed to be used for the purpose of smoking or administering a controlled drug shall, until the contrary is proved, be presumed to have been smoking or administering a controlled drug in that place or premises." Thus, one runs the risk of arrest for drug use by simply being in the company of drug users. The law also allows officers to search premises and individuals, without a search warrant, if he "reasonably suspects that there is to be found a controlled drug or article liable to seizure". Moreover, Section 31 allows officers to demand urinalysis of suspected drug offenders."

ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of drug prohibition, although I do believe that if you're going to ban drugs you need to go all out with the punishments for selling them. Either legalize them or impose merciless punishments for distribution.
Anyways, Singapore isn't perfect however they are absolutely correct in how they deal with violent crime. Nobody can claim that their death penalty is racially biased because they hang everybody convicted of murder, regardless of race :)
Just sayin', it's maybe not the best example of non-insane, non-irrational policies...
ReplyDeleteSingapore's policies are harsh, but I don't think their rational. It's one of the few countries can claim to have (sort of) "won" a war on drugs. As I said, I'm not a believer in prohibition if you are going to do ban drugs then you need to be willing to be nasty about it.
