I did some research into what is going on with our biggest urban competitor this year, Detroit. It turns out their police department is pulling the old underreporties trick that we are playing here in Baltimore. They had some trouble coming up with a hard homicide number for 2008: They've settled on 375 for that year. However, I can't really find any hard data for 2009 yet as I can't find a neat little list with names, ages and locations. Does Detroit have a website where they tally these things? Some reports are saying that murders are down there by up to 25%, but there is one report that came out midyear saying that homicides are up. They had a dip in homicides in Q3 according to the police. But, the actual 2009 homicide number in Detroit appears to be a moving target. Then again, it's a moving target here too.
