Butt Chugging in Knoxville

Maryland's ban on assault weapons was upheld by a federal judge. Here's the full ruling via Ian Duncan. Said the plaintiffs, argle bargle, argle bargle.

A man was found dead in a car in Clifton Park* and a man was shot on N. Pulaski St on the West side.

An accident with a police cruiser at Frankfort and Plainfield injured six.

Carjacking/shooting victim Guy Jackson is suing the police after they seized him from shock trauma, questioned him and then released him on the street in a hospital gown with a bullet hole in his face.

Two separate federal cases have been thrown out due to the BPD's "credibility issues."

φκα

So the Federal Dept of Ed has opened an inquiry into the whole JHU gang-rape-at-Pi-Kappa-Alpha (aka Pike) situation. Pike's previous claims to fame include shooting a pledge with a pellet gun in Berkeley, killing a pledge in Illinois, getting banned from UVA for making pledges bite an onion and "butt chugging" in Knoxville.

Morgan Arnold, who's somewhere on the spectrum and was 14 when she allegedly conspired with her boyfriend to murder her dad, will be tried as an adult.* Three weeks before the killing she wrote in her journal, "Today, all I could hear was the sound of bones breaking and flesh tearing. It's insane and it's sick that I like those sounds." Or it means you'd make a great charcutier.

Ethan Estevez
In HarfCo terrifying-looking teacher Ethan Estevez is accused of plotting with a student to kill his wife so he could keep boning her.* Texted the student, "Like it has to look like an accident because of life insurance and stuff."

Since we've been gone...
Two three-year-olds were shot in two weeks, McKenzie Elliott and Knijah Bibb. Person-of-interest  Tyrone Jamison, 21, turned himself in on a probation violation (but hasn't been officially charged, it seems), one Davon Wallace, 25, was arrested for Bibb's.

Tyree Woodson, nabbed on a warrant, shot himself inside the Southwest district police station.

Some teenagers hijacked a school bus for fun

And Michael Vick advised Ray Rice to "try to make amends for what you've done."

Roasting, cleaving, voluntarying

Where are all the city's illegal guns coming from? With only five officers on the gun task force and all them federal pro-gun laws it's all anybody's guess. Check out this 4-time gun convict's hand cannon, recovered at a house also operating a daycare.

A city detective, Shane Volk, was killed when he crashed his Jeep in Glen Arm.

Michael "Blizz" Singer
The tattoo-faced murder accessory who looks 65, left, is a 35-year-old local rapper who goes by "Blizz.* His wife Shelbie is accused of stabbing to death one John Bowman, 22, in Arbutus.

Police think one 16-year-old is responsible for 25 burglaries in Canton.

Tragic: Sharon Mulcahy, the woman whose dogs roasted in a motel parking lot for 20 hours, died soon after she was released from Central Booking. The family alleges the jail failed to give her proper medical attention.

City Paper: Baltimore is "famous for crime, and yet, when it comes to arson, this is the best we can do?" Uhm, I think the city actually does pretty okay on that front.

Hey, that abortion-sign bill is still breathing,* and the Sun actually has me convinced it's a good idea. If Wisconsin can make doctors rape women with a probe and Texas and North Carolina can get thisclose to shutting down every family planning clinic in the state, the phony baloney clinics can suck up posting a piece of paper with facts on it.

Speaking of intrusions, a federal judge has allowed EFF's case against the NSA to go ahead (thanks Scan Baltimore). And good piece in the Economist about our newly revealed secret Supreme Court.

Media Blabber: the Tribune is cleaving off its newspaper biz from its TV-station biz, and is apparently not yet scrapping the idea of selling the publishing piece to a rogues' gallery of shoppers that include Charles and David Koch, a group of libertarian 'voluntaryists' and an alleged Chinese spy's ex-husband.

Sine Die Bloody Sine Die

So Sine Die came and went* with 100+ bills sent to the guv, including a ban on hand-held cell phones while driving, and a ban on cyberbullying, but without a resolution to the pit bill bull, and with Vallario Jr.'s withered haunches resolutely planted on the marijuana decriminalization/taxation bill, HB1453/ SB297, keeping it from being out to a vote in even with 57% of MDers supporting it.

So sad:
One Jamal Champan was convicted of first-degree murder for the 2010 slaying of an unnamed victim in the NW

The battle for control of the message, meta edition-*- neighbors are criticizing police silence on 45-minute-hovering-helicopter incidents. Here's a good idea: Seattle has pioneered something called "'tweet-by-beat,' with 51 hyper-local Twitter feeds putting out calls for service — excluding sex crimes and domestic violence — through an automated feed. That was a move made after the agency in 2011 overwhelmed followers of its main account by tweeting nearly every incident reported to police. Police in Cambridge, Mass., in February also began "real-time" tweeting of 911 dispatcher logs."

A police van was in a wreck in Overlea

12-stepping might help you quit drinking, but it can't make you a decent human being, it seems. Are AK-47s even legal here?

This HarfCo Sheriff's deputy is such a badass

Pickled egg time

Expected more local-news fanfare regarding the final passage of the gun bill on the TV news last night, but perhaps because of the late hour* of the final vote yesterday, local news has been pretty quiet. WBAL didn't get around to posting a story until almost 11 a.m. today-- "live, local, latebreaking" indeed-- and passage of a similar bill in Connecticut filled yesterday's gun-news hole. But they've noticed in Seattle, and according to the AP's Brian Witte, the Senate will begin reconciliation this morning (thanks, Brian Witte, MD reporter not published in MD).
(ps. Seven rounds, really, NY?)

Police are asking for the public's help solving a cold case from 1983, Samuel Williams, who was shot in the 4000 block of Wabash Ave by the train tracks.

At a York Rd Partnership meeting, Batts blamed the spike of homicides in the Northern on "micro rivalries" between the Tree Top Pirus and Black Guerilla Family members.

Two people were robbed outside the McDonald's at 29th and Greenmount.

Police are ISO two guys who shot a man in the arm with a semiautomatic handgun on O'Donnell Street over on the East side. But how do they know the men's exact ages?

And plenty of "you know what time it is" and "give me what you got"in the Baltimore Guide SE Blotter.

"Gimme two a dem pickled eggs and some Skoal"--  a portly, pale degenerate robbed the Gateway Road 7-11 in Edgewood at knifepoint.

Paperwork Issues

Two suspects were arrested after the double shooting on Bentalou Street-- one man was shot to death (Cham Green ID on Bentalou is Ralph Timmons, 34, of 1905 North Bentalou Street. It was his son that was wounded. Here we have an involved father that was parenting his child and now he's dead. Very sad) but his son, a brave 11-year-old boy who was shot in the leg, was able to run down the street and find officers who were still on foot patrol following the triple murder on Fulton Avenue on the West side.

Intrepid blogger Cham was able to find links for two of the Fulton Avenue victims:  IDs: Tyreka Martin, 20; Kishawna Pinder, 20; Brian Powell, 21
Person of Interest

Police released photos of a person of interested wanted in the murder of Michael Jones on 2/21.

There's no such thing as being "found innocent," but Stewart Dennis Sachs, president of the board of Har Sinai, accused of money laundering for a crack dealer, has seen all charges dismissed against him, his lawyer says the accusations were the result of a "paperwork issue." Sachs is the owner of a firm specializing in "distressed capital" whose property holdings have previously been featured on Baltimore Slumlord Watch.

City officer Adam Lewellen is in hot water for lying on warrants, falsifying a court order and burgling his ex-girlfriend, illegal gun possession, forging his address on his driver's license, dusting scales with phony cocaine...

Berger's Cookies owes the IRS bigtime.

The State Troopers were audited, but auditors found inventory control to be "lax"-- the Troopers apparently are not keeping count of their vehicles ... or guns..  or computers... or real estate.

A prodigious number of updates in this week's Murder Ink.

Ohnooo, a 5th accuser for puppeteer Kevin Clash. And so now we all know who calls those chat lines advertised in the back of the City Paper -- 16 year old boys and chickenhawks. And remember that Towson lady pimp, Di Zhang? The Feds are going after her property.

If you can't get enough of hearing people pontificating about gun laws, Goucher is hosting a panel of experts in their Hyman Anthenaeum at 8 p.m. on April 15.
And a status report:

Holy Saturday / Sunday Twerking

Three people were shot overnight last night, on Harlem Ave, 29th and O'Donnell Sts., and the homicide count is up to 49.

...must be said, Khiry Marquis Jowers had a lot of arrests for someone only 21 (assault, possession, forged prescriptions).

It passed the House on Friday, but the gun bill will have to wait til Tuesday to go the Senate, tomorrow they're busy voting on possibly designating the soft-shell crab sandwich as the official state sandwich while simultaneously celebrating the 7th day of Passover.

Daily Howler: Baltimoreans say the darndest things, by whom they mean Dr. Ben Carson, who's been reciting Maggie Gallagher's verbiage verboten on TV: "no group of individuals, whoever they are, whatever their belief systems, gets to change traditional definitions." Inshizzle, my herp derp.

And here's one of the craziest stories of all time: a guy moved out of his house to sell it, and a squatter named Lakisha Fillyaw moved in, won't leave, and talked to the I-Team.

Free pens and solid-gold paper clips

Happy Friday news dump, gun nuts! After eight hours of debate, booing and sighs, the gun bill went to the House yesterday with the assault-weapons restrictions intact. Nathaniel T. Oaks: "Why do the authorities need to retain the fingerprints?”
Uhm like because duh?
Also released, a list of items found at Adam Lanza's house. What a difference a Bushmaster makes-- if he'd taken an armful of any of the other weapons in his arsenal, how many might still be alive?

Ed Ericson Jr. writes about the variegated dramas of the "Men of the Pen" -- Big Boyz Bail Bonds

Harbor East developers are edging closer to a $107 million tax break, and howcomes traffic cones got 5 times more expensive in three years and office-supply costs quintupled? Hrm?

In another case of the city paying taxes for developers, the state's attorney's office will be spending $1.4 million a year to get out of its rat-infested courthouse offices and into schweet suites in the SunTrust building.

Baltimore Shake n Bake

WMAR says five, the Sun says six murders this past weekend,* which has got to be close to some kind of record.

So even though the vast majority of Marylanders support the basic provisions of the bill, last Friday protestors against the Firearm Safety bill way outnumbered people who showed up to support the bill, now passed by the senate and moving on to the house as HB 294. The bill doesn't take anyone's guns away, specifies the right to carry between a residences and places of business and gives gun buyers until October 2013 to buy all of the assault weapons they can. New provisions include fingerprinting for licenses, keeping the previously forcibly committed from buying, letting police officers examine gun-shop sales records-- I guess before only the ATF could do that. Anyway, if you have an opinion on this bill, especially if you are from Baltimore city, a demographic markedly missing from Friday's protests, it would behoove you to contact your elected officials to offer your opinion.

Friends, hundreds of bystanders and cameras everywhere, yet no one who was on the Ravens' parade route will step forward to ID 15-year-old De'ontae Smith's killer.*

Life + 35 for Anthony Cole, who shot at this wife but killed a bystander instead.

WTF? In the county one Charles V. Palmer is charged with stabbing his 14-year-old son in the neck.*

Family of LaRelle Amos are still ISO answers about who shot her.

A Dateline-worthy mystery in Kent County: what happened to Robin Pope?

Perhaps this?

Still No Bail for the Spectator

Man shot and killed at the Continental Arms shooting range* in Timonium

Two teenagers were shot last night in Edgewood

Metaphor fail: Republican E.J. Pipkin calls the gov's handgun-licensing requirement a "poll tax." Because you're not really participating in democracy if you aren't equipped to shoot yourself or others in the head.

Carrie Wells reports that the officer who shot a man Tuesday* was also implicated in the shooting of Donnie Chestnut in 2007 (which you may remember as the "Popsicle-stick case")

Though rape charges were dropped against one of the owners of the Blue Agave, Cheshire says the investigation of the incident is ongoing.*

Really?! Some senators want to change the speed-camera law to give camera operators even less oversight, letting "specified persons" review tickets instead of requiring police officers to do it. Some nerve!

And, shocking to no one, the Spectator has been denied bail again (for the third time) by the same judge he yelled at at the last bail hearing.

It's like Siberia!

The Balto Spectator aka Απολλώς Frank James MacArthur sent me a paper letter. Aren't those always so nice to get? I'd sent him a "sorry you're spending the holidays in jail" note before Xmas and a private Tweet during that last-day-of-November standoff, offering to secure his Waverly place at a moment when it sincerely sounded like the whole thing was going to go in the suicide-by-cop direction. His response was postmarked 12/27/12 and he admits ownership of the shotgun:

"I'm sure my 50-year-old shot gun in a closet put me right up there on Baltimore's dirty dozen most wanted criminals list. God forbid I might actually use it to defend myself in my own home. How very primitive and savage of me."

He goes on to say,

Speaking of primitive and so PoMo, he also hand-wrote a post he wants me to edit and post-- no thanks to that, but I'll put up a Tweeted phone picture because I am nice. Also, I believe that if you think "somebody ought to do something to help" that somebody is you -- maybe you, dear writer, should write him and offer him help.

Now, walking around with a shotgun hunting down teen vandals, that might be rational. I'm sure the little reprobates in Waverly can piss a person the ef off. But him keeping a shotgun after his conviction? not rational or smart. Not double-checking to make sure your probation requirements have been met and your probation is over? Not rational or smart. If he really thinks cops are out to get him, then don't give them an excuse, duh. Not going directly to the police station with a lawyer to sort things out the nanosecond one hears one is the subject of a warrant is not rational. Yelling "and you call yourself a judge," to Judge Lynn Stewart -- it confirmed everyone's worst suspicions of an impulsive and uncontrolled demeanor.

What happened to the Spectator is exactly what should happen to people with illegal weapons, they ought to be monitored by the state/Feds, and if they go off the radar and don't report for probation or surrender on a warrant they should be tracked town. Especially if they are also making violent public statements, wether they're making them at Harborplace or on Twitter.

so anyway,
if you would also like a paper correspondence with the Spectator his contact info is left. If you are really a friend of MacArthur (cough, Duane Davis, Tom Kiefaber, cough) then you'll try to help him use this experience positively instead of encouraging him to not take responsibility for himself and using him to further your own self-centered agenda. The next hearing for AFJMcA is Feb 8 FWIW.

ps. So looks like his purported attorney Jill P. Carter was at the bail hearing, but then why did she not make the plea for bail on his behalf in the courtroom and some nervous younger woman was doing it instead? Shrug.

'my mouth was watering the whole time'

Whoa, an arrest in a homicide before we I* found out it happened: 17-year-old Michelle Adrian of Middletown, MD was allegedly killed by 18-year-old Dorrien Allen* in the 3900 block of Mulberry St. The Ink covers the year's murders one through five.

Major gun summit in town yesterday, featuring Bloomberg and with recommendations delivered to the White House.

What. The. Fuck!! Some poor single Baltimore woman had lunch with an old college pal one Gilberto Valle, now a NYPD cop living in Queens. Valle then allegedly proceeded to go online and share his fantasies of killing, slow- cooking and eating her. Oh, and he also had a dossier on 100 other women, compiled from police dept info. His partner, one Michael Van Hise, posted online about wanting to turn his 3-year-old stepdaughter into a sex slave and offering up his nieces for rape. Just, what..? Good gravy, single ladies, watch out for those old college friends.

178/ Fenton twitters

Fatal shooting victim last night was 24 yr old active duty US Navy.* He and his brother shot at while exiting car, motive unknown. .. Neighbors say Alonzo Gladden, the Navy member killed last night, was very quiet, respectful. Had only been in town a few hours. ... They speculate shooting mustve been case of mistaken identity. Police: When shooters realize who they killed, will be "heavy burden to carry"

Concealed-carry arguments did kick off yesterday in Richmond, with an ASA for MD (not Doug Gansler) arguing that the state has a compelling interest in controlling the carrying of guns in public, and the gun-rightsers' lawyer Alan Gura arguing that gun ownership on demand is a human right.

Fern Shen on the sad lists of deceased students and faculty at the School Board.

Oh my, Stash, the former 98 Rock deejay (real name Stephen Gregory Smith, 49), is going to jail-- six months in the HarfCo tank for driving under the influence* of Four Loko and causing a 3-car accident that injured five people, including a disabled veteran. (Wonder which flavor it was? Peach? Green Apple?) The Harford Aegis reported that Stash's 'rap sheet' includes 56 tickets, 32 traffic convictions, another DUI nine months before the accident and a marijuana arrest. The night of he accident his wife, mad that Stash was drunk, threw him out of the house he shares/d with her and their five kids.

:(
It's been two years and a day since the death of the marvelous Judge John Prevas,* right.  ... "he rarely made reference to the fact that he had himself been a city crime victim, shot in the arm with a blast from a shotgun in 1972 ... 'I'm sure I would have gone into private practice had it not been for that.' ... Prevas had colorful moments, to be sure. In 2002, he ordered a police detective to do 25 push-ups for missing court,* and had another locked up [for missing court]. When it was revealed that it was not the police department's fault, but city prosecutors, he did not apologize, but said the punishments should serve a warning.  In 2006, he received a rare public reprimand for 'angry and uncontrollable' shouting from the bench." He's also remembered for sending to jail "Don Papa" Blake for the gruesome murder of teen Terrance Randolph (& mailing me the case files, which haunt me to this day), Catholic child rapist John Merzbacher, and Willie Featherstone, the killer of 15-year-old Friends School student Trudy Levin.

Four shootings overall overnight, including a second fatal: James Utley, 26, killed in 1400 E Preston St; same block as the Dawson House..  Bpd is primary but NCIS will be involved too
Baltimore Police ‏@BaltimorePolice Confirmed Shooting-Caroline&Preston St. Eastern District. Adult male victim. Detectives notified.

Two dancers, three dead ladies and a gun-hoarding miscreant

cherrie gammonFinally, almost two years later, the Cherrie Gammon story* can be told. Or vaguely surmised. The 25-year-old mom of two, Block dancer and heroin addict turned dealer and informant, right, owed horse money to one Monica "Money" McCants, a woman who was running a $14k a week heroin ring out of the Club Pussycat with her son and some others. McCants suspected that the dancer/dealer/mom was "snitching" to police (and court records showed that indeed she was*), yet despite her fears "Money" gave her son "Tay" "obscenity-laced commands" on an (intercepted) phone call to recoup her horse cash from Gammon by any means necessary. Gammon wound up dead from five wounds from the gun of one Hassan "Rowland" Muhammad near Leakin Park with the help and/or in the presence of a guy court documents nicknamed "Miami." Junior drug-gang members Tyrone Johniken, 30, and Gary Cromartie, 23, also face drug dealing and murder conspiracy charges.
...sOooo is one of those guys "Miami"? Or was "Miami" an undercover officer or some other kind of informant who was with Gammon but didn't/couldn't stop her execution? Note quote from Fenton's story in 1/11:* "Witnesses told police that she was selling heroin and crack cocaine for Donte "Tay" Baker, Muhammed, who is known as "Rowland," and a man nicknamed "Miami" ... The witnesses said the men took her from her home in the early morning hours of Dec. 12 and drove her to the area where she was shot and killed."
Monica Money Mom McCants is expected to be in prison until she's @52-57, Tyrone and Gary are still yet to be tried. Related story: P. Hermann on Block dancer Takira "Candy" Leray Johnson-Bey,* stabbed outside of Norma Jean's Gentleman's Club in 2008

Suspicious: Reality star Antoine Ashley, aka "Sahara Davenport" from the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race (aka Whitney Houston in the Snatch Game and the live-in companion of runner-up Manila Luzon) sashayed away at the age of 27 (or 33) from heart failure at Johns Hopkins Hospital Monday. ... what was NY resident Ashley doing in Baltimore city? Sounds shady, lady... The funeral will reportedly be held October 12 or 13 at Snowden Funeral Home(301) 762-2500 - 246 North Washington Street, Rockville, MD 20850.

Six years after the SW Flex Squad treated newspaper-serial readers to month-long marathons of corruption charges starring Jemini Jones and Vicki Mengel,* it appears the SW Flex Squad is still in business (and not even rebranded). The squad arrested convicted armed robber in Pigtown with a shit-ton of guns, one made-for-TV miscreant Wayne Petty (right). For all of you eager would-be gun consumers I will recount the guns: Seized Weapons: Ruger 22/45 .22 Caliber handgun; Ruger Blackhawk .45 Caliber handgun; Ruger Single-Six .22 Caliber handgun; Ruger Vaquer .44 Caliber handgun; Remington 870 Express Magnum 12 Gauge shotgun; Ruger Blackhawk .357 Caliber handgun;  Ruger 10/22 .22 Caliber rifle; Winchester 1300 12 Gauge shotgun; Winchester 30-30 rifle; Thompson Center Arms .50 Caliber rifle; Connecticut Valley Arms .50 Caliber rifle; Thompson Center Arms .50 Caliber rifle; Braztech 410GA Shotgun;Remington 7600 30-06 shotgun; New England Firearms 12 Gauge shotgun; Ithica Featherlight 12 Gauge shotgun. And what will become of all those fine guns, I wonder...? Tune in next year for the chilling conclusion, or not...

Baltimore Co. police confirm that woman whose body was found in Leakin Park was that of 62 y/o who walked away from assisted living facility... County authorities say they don't suspect foul play.

Stat of the Day

The unbeLIEvable manpower shortage downtown has sunk the city to a new state of anarchy!
The director of the Crime Lab, Ed Koch(!) says the city has about 900 900 guns "stacked up in carts" awaiting ballistics examinations.

The good news: in as few as three to seven years of training, you too could be making more than six figures as a gun examiner!
(Thanks Galt!)
