Will Patrick Byers be charged in the City or the County for the Carl Lackl murder? His victim was killed in Rosedale, but he was locked up in the Baltimore jail. Hopefully the law says that he gets tried in the county, since murder for hire is a death penalty offense in Maryland, and Baltimore County believes in actually punishing criminals. Now if only we could execute juveniles.

It sounds like Byers will be in the city, I guess because he solicited the murder from the city jail. I wonder how he got a cell phone in jail?

Maybe Rod will do us one last favor and pursue the federal death penalty. He'd probably never be executed but it would be a nice gesture.

A federal death sentence would scare me more than a Maryland one if I were a criminal, since capital punishment is almost certainly on the way out in this state. On a more realistic note, prison sentences from the feds mean no parole after he's put away. Not letting violent criminals free, what a radical idea. Maybe someday Maryland will figure that one out.

As for the cell phone thing, that's probably the least surprising part of the story. He probably just bribed a guard.

Is anyone else worried that the Sun's coverage of the use of VOP hearings to put criminals back in prison will result in some clown from the legislature trying to crack down on the practice? Legally it sounds like the SA's office is on solid ground, since the very pro-criminal MD Court Of Appeals OK'd their tactics a long time ago, but some asshat from the General Assembly might decide that we don't have enough thugs and hoodlums roaming our streets.

Let's remember about the 'unjust' treatment of Charles Carroll:

His sentence was not commuted. He plead guilty and was sentenced to 30 years for his admitted behavior. 15 years was generously suspended. He applied for and received probation. That makes him subject to oversight: he could simply serve out his sentence and avoid the oversight.

But let's think about his indignant mother. She's upset because she thought her murderer son got off. She seems to be unconcerned that he engages in aggressive sexual behavior which bears a striking resemblance to rape.

She appears to be unsurprised with the general criminality of his conduct. She is a hoodlum once-removed and is very much contributory to Baltimore's problem.

Start prosecuting the mothers, sisters, and baby mommas for aiding, abetting, and obstructing.

At the very least, yank her income-support assistance, terminate her public or section 8 housing.

If anything, I'd hope to see greater use of VOP to guarantee that felons don't return to their familiar haunts where they are geographically guaranteed to have forbidden contact with other felons. Redline the high criminalty areas and forbid early releasees to go there. If they do, violate them back into prison.

If you are on probation you should keep to the most straight and narrow imaginable.

So lets see 30 years for murder, 15 suspended, out after 7, on probation for 5. One day before the 5 years are up you get caught jaywalking. Result 23 year sentence. I'm fine with that.

The chief judge of the Court of Special Appeals has been named to replace Judge Alan Wilner on the Maryland Court of Appeals.

An armed robbery followed by apolice involved shooting just a few blocks away from where I live. Unfortunately the suspect will probably survive, but that's one hoodlum who's going to be out of circulation for a while.

If you think that our justice system is f***'d up, you should read this article. "Murderer wins right to be father." Beyond disgusting. Remember this the next time someone from Europe criticizes the use of capital punishment in the US.

If I ever do commit murder remind me to do it in the UK. Also, what the hell is wrong with women who meet guys through prison pen-pal programs?

To the blog owner: Did you see this article?

A woman brutally attacked and dragged off a city bus (the #3 or, more likely, the #22 since it travels through Hampden) in the middle of the afternoon. For wanting an open seat, or so it appears.
