Two observations on the shooting while bystanders giggled:
1) not surprised the people involved were from Waverly; and
2) wjz reports the following response from the Mayor:
"But overall, it really stresses the fact that we really need to provide our young people and families with mental health services," said Mayor Sheila Dixon.
Dixon openly questioned the sanity of suspects involved in the robbery. Prosecutors say both teens were on probation for prior violations.
Enough with the lame excuses, Madame Mayor. They're hoodlums, plain and simple. Jail 'em.
As for the bystanders, that's commonly referred to as depraved indifference, and it is also a behavioral but entirely nonpsychiatric abnormality.
These people do NOT need any 'treatment'; they need a good kick in the ass.
Y'know, in light of apologist comments by several people here whose opinions I generally respect, I've reviewed the tape of the incident several times over.
I come to the following conclusion:
those two girls were NOT trying to lay low and avoid danger; they were genuinely amused and only demonstrated concern when the gun-wielding hoods moved suddenly toward them.
Had the hoods exited more smoothly, I'm certain the girls would have continued with their amusement at the victim's expense.
I'm NOT impressed with their behavior. I don't think they were smart survivors. I think they were smart alecs.
You could be right, and we'll never know, but I think that if you were female you would have a different perspective.
