'They brought a toilet and a megaphone'

Adam Meister takes to his blog now that "this part of the saga is over." ... check out this clip he found from the Afro-American, June 1972: Frank Conaway charged after hitting his wife and putting her in the hospital! On one hand, neither I nor Adam had been born when this went down. On the other, I get the sense it was not so easy to get charged with wife-beatery 40 years ago.

Isn't the Lautenberg Amendment retroactive? How is Conoway legally allowed to even POSSESS a firearm if he was arrested for domestic abuse, let alone have one of the super-rare MD License to Carry a Handgun?

According to testimony given by MSP at the Concealed Carry Bill hearings in Annapolis the last 2 years, MSP's background checks are the most stringent and comprehensive in the country.

I guess it depends on who you know...

This might not have to do with anything but when one searches in the Maryland Judiciary Case Search, the oldest cases go back to 1987. However, many periodicals go back much further. The government may be hampered by database searchability limitations. I think it would be so helpful if the state paid whatever it costs to make that case search go back for 50 years more. We'd learn a lot about everybody.

Cham: I'm almost certain that the Maryland State Police have access to more than just MD Judiciary Case Search.

Anon: My understanding is that you have to be convicted of domestic violence or under a restraining order for the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban to apply. The article only says he was arrested and it's entirely possible he was never convicted.

Re: Frank Conaway, I think the man is repulsive but I hope that Meister doesn't get too carried away in his anti-Conaway crusade. Exposing dirt like this is good, but pulling more stunts like hanging around the guy's house could derail the good work that Meister has done.

Probably in 1972 putting your wife in the hospital got you a ticket ... to the Sheraton seafood buffet. That1972 Afro is an amazing read. I wish I could find the second half of the Conway article.

I'd like to read the 1968 editions of the Afro.

My interest in going back on the Judiciary case search was piqued when Stanley Eugene Brunson was being discussed last week, alleged killer of Donte Collins. There is a Stanley Eugene Brunson born 09/76 who is the alleged killer. There is another Stanley Eugene Brunson but this one has a Jr at the end of his name born 03/70 who lives and commits crimes in the Perryville area. We see this often, two men, same name, just a few years apart.

I'd like to know more about a Stanley Eugene Brunson Sr, perhaps born in the 1950s. But there is no mention of him. Not only would I like to see all the judicial records but a nice list of all the homicide victims dating back to 1690 would be nice as well.
