September 20

Suspected gang member Derrell Miller pled guilty to the first-degree murder of Derald Guess, a father of nine from Edgewood.

In the blotter, 23-year-old Harvin Sandoval was arrested for the first-degree murder of 15-year-old Jessenia Dubon. Police are also seeking a second suspect, 25-year-old Oman Hernandez.

In Carroll County, a woman got a 10-year prison term for three counts of vehicular manslaughter-- she was driving 100 mph, drunk, to get to Target before it closed.

A Pasadena woman got two years for neglecting a man with Down's Syndrome.

A man in a bird mask robbed the Maryland Zoo.

Speaking of dirty birds, other Orioles are being questioned about Palmeiro's steriod use.

In Overlea, police are warning parents about a suspicious man seen hanging around school-bus stops.

A grand jury report found that Maryland's prison health care system is inadequate.

DJ equipment, a pair of pants, a cat, a PlayStation and a seven-year-old Chrysler = stuff stolen in the northern 'burbs lately.

Hey wow, a ray of hope that maybe I can stop this depressing-ass blog one day! The Sun has a new section, "Crime Watch Digest"!

Has anyone expressed an interest in the technical adequacy of current police manpower or the accuracy of published crime reports in this city? There are only about 1000 patrol officers to address the challenges of our over 30,000 active parole & probation offenders and their means of dealing with the excess demand for policing has been to squelch the lower-level crimes, which are generally not even reported, least of all in Compstat, from which the crime mapping is created. The adverse balance between post officers and ambient criminality, by the way, is the cause of the high number of spurious arrests: the number of incidents/conduct violations per officer per shift doesn't allow for very thorough procedure and the presence of so many violent offenders on the loose requires that officers double- and triple-up for backup purposes when conducting an arrest or stop. This very real potential hazard thins out the coverage past the limits of reason. We need a LOT more officers and the administration doesn't seem to be getting anywhere with that task, even rejecting the possibility that better compensation may be needed to timely fill the current vacancies.

Wow, thanks, Sweetney, I had no idea! The Sunday NYT is the only paper I actually read-- everything else I skim unless it's about Kate Moss having a coke-fueled three-way. How creepy/lazy that no one from the CP even called to confirm my name, much less to invite me to the party.

Please don't give this up even if the Sun does a Crime watch. The Sun sucks and is beholden to the mayor. This is honest.
