Opening statements in the murder trial of David Ellerby, 32, of E. Lanvale Street began at 2 p.m. today before Judge John Glynn. The Baltimore City Grand Jury indicted Ellerby August 24, 2004 for first-degree murder and handgun violations. Court documents allege that on September 10, 2002, Ellerby shot and killed Reginald Tyler, 27, in the 300 block of E. Lafayette Avenue.
Damian Mitchell, 28, was fatally shot in the head in the Northeastern district.
Ameer Taylor, 31, was arrested and charged with the murder of Samuel Richardson (shown above, with his nephew).
More on the mysterious homicide of the Reverend Lorenzo Handy, whose body was found in Charles Village about a block from where Samuel Richardson was murdered in June.

Shooting // An 18-year-old man was in or near a liquor store in the 1700 block of Fleet St. shortly before midnight Sunday when a gunman fired a shot that struck the victim in the right ear. The gunman and an accomplice fled and were being sought. The victim ran to a convenience store in the 2000 block of Fleet St., and he was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment. Police said the shooting was captured on a surveillance camera.
They caught the bastard...finally. BTW Samuel Richardson was my brother.... This has made my christmas a little better, I hope that bastard has a nice Christmas in jail
Liz, I'd be interested in YOUR assessment of the characterization that Charles Village is oh, so safe... "we never have trouble here". I think it's largely true up by the university, but not so on the edges of the neighborhood, say by Remington, Greenmount, Harwood, and toward North Ave., in all of which places criminality is pervasive and permitted.
I'm tired of people telling me it's not as bad as I think and "all cities have (this amount of) crime".
Balto. City has about 3.7 times the crime rate of other metropolitan areas nationally, and that averages over its neighborhoods, good and bad alike. Places like Harwood and Greenmount, where the conduct is concentrated, certainly have ten times the national average.
That's nothing short of unacceptable. I encourage the Governor to declare a state of lawlessness here.
I would agree although I think safety is best from Charles to Guilford and from 26th northward... Remington , which I live in, is not exactly somewhere you would want to be lost at, nor is harwood or greenmount ave. The main thing here, which I also stated in an editorial letter to the citypaper, is this "code of silence which remains to this day and keeps many of these criminals in buisness with impunity. I think the perception that this area is oh so safe is oh so wrong to anyone with working eyes who can see what really goes on. Even in Charles Village where I have family, houses and cars are burglarized at a high rate, although i don't know how many people actually file reports, but on my father's block last year there were 3 muggings, several home robberies and several auto robberies.
