October 9

WBAL: Leonard Nathaniel Garrett was found shot to death in "Lincoln" Park (they probably mean Leakin Park?). (<214)

Liz says there was a dead body at 26th and Miles in Remington.

Another violent weekend in Bumberg. Eight people ... wait, 9... no, 10... were shot over the weekend in the South and NW.

Stephon Nicholson, 19, was stabbed to death at the detention center, and Kevon Gantt, 19, was stabbed also.

A horribly depressing father-son murder-suicide in Gaithersburg.

bad guys arrested over the weekend:
An armed man in a stolen car was arrested Friday in the wilderness of White Marsh.

The teenager who was shooting kids with a BB gun at Pikesville High was arrested.

In MoCo two (suspected) MS-13 members, Roberto Moreno, 25, and Dimas I. Castillo, 27, were arrested for a stabbing in Gaithersburg.

AAC police arrested Williams Ludlow, who robbed a cab and left his ID, social security card and paycheck in the back seat.

Ed Norris wants a presidential pardon. Meanwhile, former commish Kevin Clark wants a state legislative committee to look into the legality of his O'firing.

Ehrlich collected the police union endorsement Friday.

Anybody read this week's NYker article about prison escape artist Richard McNair? Here's a link to the dash-cam video of the last sighting of the slippery sociopath.

I say grant Norris his pardon, restore him as Police Commissioner, and assign to NO'Malley his remaining community service obligation.

Does anyone keep track of how many people get shot in Baltimore? I've heard it said that attempted murders haven't gone down that much, hospitals have just gotten very good at fixing people up. Obviously, a bit of an overstatement.

Seby,
That's sorta the reason for using Shock Trauma admissions as a proxy for most-violent crimes, such as gunshots. We don't have actual tallies. That's why we've had the dispute outlined by Jayne Miller about how the Health Commissioner tallied the results omitting several admitting facilities.
Attempted murder is a different kind of figure. It's a legal charge, and many of the victims don't cooperate with the prosecutor, so it vanishes. The shock trauma admissions are more like a public health-generated figure.

BTW, Cybes, didja ask Norris about how many officers he thinks the department would really need to do its job properly?

How about Bullsh!tStat ??

Galt,

Wasn't Norris in charge when the BPD implemented the "Stop, frisk, & harass" program. Are you sure you want him running the department again?

how come there's an article in the sun today talking about how there were 8 shootings this weekend, yet the same paper runs, in the same edition, the police blotter, which details a shooting that happened yesterday that is not one of the 8 mentioned in the bigger article?

oh whoops, hold on, fox45 says 13 people were shot this weekend and one died, and even though they gave his name, they didn't say where his shooting happened.

WBAL said 9 people on the news at 6, and says 10 on the Web site.

So, how did the Sun and WBAL miss the 13? Did police underreport initially?

John Galt said...

No. Understand, when the media report crime(s), they're not representing that it's a complete count. It may change because of a press deadline, because of breaking news, or because the Police have announced additional incidents out of sequence. The boy, Garrett, whose body was found, was on Winans Way, Leakin Park. He probably wasn't killed there, though. Leakin Park is the local dumping grounds for bodies.

Mondy, I'm actually OK with stop and frisk. You find a gun or an open warrant, do it. If not, don't fabricate probable cause or abate through arrest. If you don't intend to charge me, I should walk. Thge flip side is, if you do find a gun or there is an open warrant, prosecute it fully and put the guy in cold storage, not just PBJ or community service nonsense. It's about incarcerating the bad apples. Norris was good for that.

Two students got held up at Towson U. in an armed robbery.

They're totally freaked out, because it never happens up there. Major calamity when white teens get jacked.

How about 600 gunshot incidents a year? Welcome to my world, it's Baltimore B.

But then again, we don't matter. We're just a buncha damn black people here. Ain't that right, Mr. O'Malley ??

John Galt said...

The BCPD has announced that it's increasing deployments to the street patrols on account of the gun violence. That seems an admission that more manpower would have prevented some/most of the violence.

But this isn't news. Then, why didn't they provide the manpower ? Like, before ? Answer: because the Commissioner has failed to properly staff his department. Nor for a month. Not for a year. For a decade.

Fire the man. He's endangering lives here. It's not an inadvertant Oops. He's failed miserably. Get a REAL Commissioner, not some local boy. Yes, pay real money. Yes, to officers too. Real money for real services.

How to balance the budget? Tell Sheila Dixon's sister to go to work for a living in the private sector (not including municipal contractors). No more overpriced school lunches on 'emergency' contracts. And no more handouts to museums with free admission. If money's so easy to come by, put it back in the city coffers.

Oh, and where's that bill asking the State to send in State Police? It's still being held up by O'Malley's uncle-in-law, Bobby Curran's judiciary committee. Take it out of committee now and pass it. People are just dying to see O'Malley as Governor. Just dying. All over the place.

Seby, the Shootings are over the 400 mark so far this year.

Shootings and Homicides are tracked seperately, since someone could be killed in various ways. (ie Stabbing, other blunt object, beaten to death, choking, etc.)

Most Shootings are nothing other than failed Homicide attempts.

Galt,

I thought you had a problem with stop & frisk. I remember you had cited a column by Dan Rodricks back in January as an example of how O'Malley's heavy-handed tactics, such as stop & frisk, were costing him the votes of law-abiding citizens. I think if you had been accused of committing a crime by some overzealous and rude cops (as I was), you might rethink your position on this.

I want the police to be aggressive in fighting crime, but I do not wish to live in a police state.

Mr. Mephistopheles said...

Galt,

Here is the comment that I'm citing...

I don't often agree with Sun columnist Dan Rodricks given that he feels drug addiction excuses misconduct, but his column today rings true.

O'Malley's poor strategy for crime reduction is costing him law-abiding supporters. The more stable path to lower crime is more manpower-intensive. You need many more cops and better ones, at that.

oof, how can you know enough about this site to find one specific quote by galt made in january but not know that he's been wrongfully arrested like two or three times and isn't shy about talking about it?

Anonymous said...

Wait, galt's black?

Mr. Mephistopheles said...

Anonymous,

I didn't miss Galt's previous comments about being arrested- but, as I recall, they were not "stop and frisk" related (Galt, correct me if I'm wrong). I remember his comment from January because my "stop & frisk" incident was the subject of the Rodricks' column that Galt cited.

John Galt said...

Oh, I didn't even go off on all the times I've been Stop & Frisked.

They're too rude about it, but I don't mind being stopped. I do sorta mind when I get it into my head that it's only because of my color.

I'm very comfortable that they're never going to find anything incriminating on me.

What I object to greatly is "You're under arrest. Why? What charge? Because I said so!" That crap is tired. And it alienates many of the approximately law-abiding in my community. Jump out Tuesday.

I'm very, very angry that I've been in central booking several times and they've all been dismissed as unfounded or uncharged. It's just wrong to arrest people over and over again who pretty clearly haven't done anything.

It just reminds me of the East German Stadtspolizei.
