April 22

Police said a break-in might have been the motivation for the murder of 74-year-old Nancy Schmidt early yesterday morning. (Examiner coverage.)

The Rev. Rush "noticed a lot of things that was out of order" at the fatal memorial service for Anthony Izzard. My guess is he was referring to the gunshots, not the noun/verb mismatch.

"Baltimore prosecutors are dismissing dozens of drug cases from two police officers banned from testifying in court amid suspicions they have been untruthful in charging documents."

An 11-year-old was robbed at gunpoint on E. Monument St.

An AAC cop got into a gunfight during a Brooklyn Park traffic stop.

Drunk Dr. Todd will get off with a year or so in jail, some AA meetings, and a $5,000 donation.

"Two police officers on a truancy detail outside Baltimore Talent Development High School across the street ran over and found two victims, both with multiple gunshot wounds."

Whenever I hear Baltimore high schools with names like "Talent Development High School" or "Empowerment Academy" I want to snicker.

One year in prison for a drunk who kills someone? Damn, remind me to stay in B'more if I ever become an alcoholic.

The "Dr. Todd" case is a joke.

Why was it necessary to cut a deal with a guy who was found drunk out of his mind heading the wrong way on 83? Was the SA's office afraid they weren't going to able to get a Baltimore jury to convict him? Did he kill all the witnesses?

If there was ever a chance to throw the book at someone, this was it. And don't give me that crap about "the real punishment will be what he was to live with" - this selfish piece of garbage should be off the roads for as long as possible.

Nevermind. The victim's family tried to cash in by suing the hospital:

Smith died after complications from injuries to her right leg caused a blood clot to travel to her lungs. The defense maintained that improper treatment at Union Memorial Hospital, and not the accident itself, caused her death, a crucial point in the relatively mild sentence imposed yesterday.

The sentencing was nearly derailed by a defense request yesterday morning to withdraw the guilty plea and proceed with a trial. The request was based on information gathered for a civil complaint filed by the Smith family against the hospital and two of its physicians. The family claims the doctors failed to test for clots, did not prescribe blood thinners that might have prevented them and discharged Smith too early.

Why should we even bother being good responsible citizens?

"The mother whose 2-year-old daughter died from a fatal dose of methadone pleaded guilty today to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, all of which was suspended."

Chech out this story on our totally out-of-control juvies. They have 2,000 active cases. That's out of a population of only 38,000 minors aged 14-17 (assuming few are younger than that).

That's over 5% !

It'd be interesting to know what exactly that girl's injuries were. Pulmonary emboli are extremely dangerous and common complications of traumatic injury. Giving blood thinners is an appropriate prophylaxis, except if there as any suspicion at all that she had internal bleeding from traumatic injury or was still bleeding externally. The danger of hemorrhage supercedes the danger of the emboli, especially since many types of emboli (for example fat/bone marrow from a broken leg) would not really be affected by thinners.

Of course none of that absolves the drunk driver of responsibility.

That guy must've been hitting the sauce pretty heavily to not notice the fact that he was going the wrong way on the JFX.

Great. 200+ cases involving two shady police officers are now in question. So I guess a bunch of them will now be dismissed.

Another day in Baltimore...
