Hmmm, how do the victims know these are local high school students? Mind you, I'm not doubting them, I just don't see anything in the article about the perpetrators wearing that signature white shirt and khaki pants. If it did, the "high school student evildoer" business would be much more believable.
Bmore---I can see where you're coming from, though I wouldn't do that myself. But, you know, there's something particularly odious and cowardly about this Baltimore "banking" (the local term for "wilding"), that one has to wonder if the city isn't producing a town full of cowards. I mean, like, 5,6,7, or 10, 12 young people jumping and beating up someone, who they don't think can easily fight back, usually someone alone, that they don't even know or ever met............ya gotta wonder: are they really proud of themselves? You know, it doesn't take a lot of guts to do that. So, are our teenagers making us into "a city of cowards"?
Wonder why they don't attack ironworkers walking by themselves?
your right..and how long can we let innocent people get BRUTALLY beaten? and its a shame that we may need to consider allowing innocent people to carry guns, but @ the end of the day, we cant let people get put in comas and sent to the ER for NO reason. To make things worse, RARELY do these cowards get caught!
Is this not a form of RACISM? im not saying all the victims of beatings are white, but lets be honest and say that these random attacks on/in the bus, subway, fells point, federal hill..etc etc...these are mostly beatings against those who are from different cultures (mostly white and non black)..this is for sure a case of "lets go beat up whitey"...and thats plain old racism...so the question is : Will the State of Maryland take the proper steps to ensure the safety of Baltimore City residents? and sadly, of course they wont. So what are we to do? stay in the house ALL day AND night?
One should not have to "hope and pray" that he or she will not fall victim to 10 teens who may choose to put them in a coma at any given time..that is not freedom, that is slavery to criminals and wrong doers...and im not a guy with a vendetta carrying a gun (because i actually care about my clean record), but there comes a time when you ask yourself : What are we going to do? what if things get worse? is it SAFE for my fiance and i to walk around fells point and federal hill (arent these places one of the few places in the whole city that your supposed to feel some what safe in!?!)? isnt there already a police shortage in this violent city?..its just plan ol' wrong!
"Banking," thank you, Buz. Even if there's no robbery involved?
"Is this a form of RACISM?" Why does it matter? In whatever case, it's a form of people being unable to identify with their victims as human beings. However someone internally justifies that lack of empathy strikes me as pretty irrelevant unless there's a terrorist intention.
feels like a lot of this started after the sowers case. those kids got off scott free, and so, why not go beat up on some more folks.
I got jumped by 7 teens walking home from work (2 blocks east of the harbor) on Lombard st. I was walking home talking on the phone with my fiancee, and one kid walked up to me and punched me, and after that, I just backed up into the middle of the street , knowing cars were coming. One kid chased me throwing wild punches at me but a fire engine came by and honked, and they just walked away (didn't even run away). and yes, a few of them had the khaki/white shirt deal. I haven't used my phone while on the streets since then, no matter where I was.
honestly, there has to be some sort of bragging rights going on in the schools about who they beat up, and what crap they get from them. what worries me is what they're going to be doing in a few years.
I dont see how it doesnt matter when teens target white people to beat and rob? im neither black nor white. You can bet your bottom dollar that if the situation was vice versa then we would be seeing it all over CNN..the situation is evident..roaming black teens looking for whites to jump...they (the teens) can come and LITERALLY take over the Inner Harbor..so i guess no where is safe now and we are just supposed to put up with is
MJB---People getting "banked" are usually not also robbed. (Of course, there are exceptions). Usually it is for "fun".
Actually, it is an assertion by the group, psycho-socially, to assert power and control over those they want to do it to. (Whoever they think they can "take".) Plenty of African-Americans get "banked" by other blacks, though I have detected a noticeable rage against people who are considered "haves" by the "have-nots" during the last couple of years.
Lack of empathy and compassion: sure. One sees the same dynamic in domestic violence cases where the male (usually) uses violence to assert his power and control over his partner, children and pets. The practice of banking people, I believe, is a precursor to Baltimore's high murder rate.
Matthew---sorry about your being assaulted. But it has been going on forever here in this town. Buz got banked when he was a scrawny kid with books on his way to the old Pratt library on Ann Street.
The kids in the Sowers case did not get off "scot-free". All are in prison, one for about 30 years. The other three, as part of a plea bargain, will be in for 6; one of those who first broke and agreed to testify against the main perpetrator has had to be placed in solitary confinement, 23 hours a day, for his own safety.
Using your cell phone while walking through lower income neighborhoods is an open invitation to get jumped. Cell phones are very often taken in street robberies; jumping people for talking on them is "payback" for waving your "wealth" in their face. Good decision not to use it in Baltimore's "contested" neighborhoods. A better move would be to use Eastern Avenue, might be worth the extra walk.
When is ANYONE on this board going to face the facts? BLACK city "culture" is breeding these animals that in the end will spell the end of the city. Period.
You guys can dance around it all you want. That is the fact.
Cham---She might fit right in. After reading news reports the last few months, one can only conclude some of our gendarmes have anger hangover and are in need of anger management.
Let's say you're completely right, "Mel." Attached to the melanin gene is one that predisposes someone to sadistic, antisocial behavior. The more melanin they have, the stronger the predisposition. all you have to do is look at a patch of someone's skin to know exactly how likely they are to engage in criminal behavior in the future. What should the government do?
I didn't say that at all MJB. I am saying that the black "community" in Baltimore is screwed up.
Take a look at Katrina. There were a lot of white folks displaced out of homes in Louisiana and Mississippi. How many reports of vandalism and violence by whites in those areas did you hear about?
What it comes down to is this. A lack of a father in the home GREATLY increases the chance of the children going astray.
Tiger Woods is a model citizen who is competitive and responsible. He is African-American. He also had a father who was there and loved and guided his life.
How many fathers were in the lives of the folks who killed Sowers and Lackl?
Answer that one before you call me racist, Cham. I think it is racist to select a Supreme Court Justice based upon gender and race. Do you?
Wow, Mel. Katrina, Tiger Woods, and a not-so-oblique Obama reference? In a post about the practice of "banking" in Baltimore? Comedy gold! That sort of free-association, foaming-at-the-mouth racism will make you an instant star at FreeRepublic. Seriously, check it out.
Mel---I assure you that many, many African-American folks living in Baltimore want nothing to do with thugs, gangs, and "street stuff". Many parents struggle to keep their kids out of that, but often the pull of the street and the crowd and the hipness of it all undermine them. Of course, lack of fathers can be one factor, among many.
A better way to look at it might be what I hear Marc Steiner say at Goucher more than a year ago: it's prison culture coming to the streets, and it's scary. Physical intimidation, fighting, and the ability to use violence, toughness, and being a member of a group versus the "other" group are the important factors in these people's lives. Mix that up with upbringings in 3rd-world-like poverty, poor/little/no education, illicit drug use, and you have a toxic mix.
buz: I live in that neighborhood. a block north of attman's. so, that's my safest route. along lombard which I would think is a busy enough street that it would keep kids from doing something stupid like that. apparently not. and yeah, talking on the phone was probably stupid of me. And, I'll never do it again, period.
Matthew, I guess my advice on route isn't gonna work for you, then. And, no, you weren't stupid.......one should have the right to talk on the phone while your walking.......it's just something I've learned over time, that one shouldn't attract attention, though it isn't fail-safe in any event. Not having the phone visible simply reduces temptation and risk. And I've learned how often phones are taken in street robberies now, since I follow such nasty stuff closely.
Other than this one incident, have you had any trouble living in that area north of Attman's? Jonestown, I guess?

thats when you take the concealed firearm out and show what can happen when you pick on random folks.

Buz:
Well said.
Thanks, Cham---Have you started the police academy yet, and which one will it be?
Please let us know!
I'm not the one going to the police academy, it's Anger Hangover who is on her way there.
