No Jail Time for Murder Mom

From the SAO's office (typos corrected):
Melanie BlevinsToday Melanie Blevins, 23, of Westminster MD, pled guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter before Judge John P. Miller. Judge Miller sentenced Blevins to 10 years suspend all but time served (1 day), with 5 years supervised probation. Conditions of probation include Blevins performing a minimum of 25 hours of community service with Habitat for Humanity each month for 3 years totaling 900 hours. Judge Miller told Blevins she also must continue in therapy.

The Baltimore City Grand Jury indicted Blevins January 9, 2009 for first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Blevins plead to the following facts of the case. On Saturday, October 4, 2008, Blevins went to Union Memorial Hospital for treatment of urinary pain. Following an examination, the treating physician reported to police that Blevins had just given birth hours before arriving to the emergency room for care.

Blevins claimed she delivered a stillborn following an undiagnosed pregnancy. The newborn was discovered in a dumpster inside a plastic trash bag behind 2640 St. Paul Street, St. Johns United Methodist Church. The medical examiner determined the child was born alive and took one breath. The medical examiner could not testify to a degree of medical certainty that the baby took more than one live breath.

well, this story is pretty awful, that you could face a child with cognition and kill it. kind of stimulates the 'pro-life' side in you.. BUT i am pro-choice because i know, as history has demonstrated (ask any reputable scholar) that abortions continue even when they are illegal.. and are replaced with riskier and more horrifying procedures like doing this, rather than terminating the pregnancy before the baby has its own cognition and existence. so my question here is.. why did this lady not get an abortion? its legal!

We live in a throw away society where life is cheap. She is a role model/pioneer for future abortionist. Hey why stop terminating at 12 weeks or 18 weeks or 26 weeks or 9 months. If you do have the child and after a year or so you decide "its just not for me", you can have it put down like a dog. I know that sounds harsh, how about a 90 day post birth no questions ask policy?

There's actually a theory, borne out by some data, that the availability of abortion has contributed significantly to the secular reduction in crime at the end of the last century.

It presupposes that people who are most likely to deliver criminal offspring fail to abort only because legal abortion was unavailable before a certain time. It doesn't take into account that some folks might just go ahead and kill the kid.

It's also worth noting that the Phillipines, where abortion is strictly illegal, has one of the highest abortion rates in the world. Also, if you take the pro-life position to its logical conclusion then you end up defending the ridiculous idea that an embryo which can only be seen with a microscope is the moral equivalent of a human being.

The abortion cuts crime theory (aka the Freakonomics scandal) is appealing on a certain level, but blogger Steve Sailer has done much to make me consider it might not be the case...

"Yet, abortion and illegitimacy both soared during the '70s, and then the youth violent-crime rate also soared when the kids born during that decade hit their teens."

He speculates that the black underclass was probably hit far less than the black middle class, as far as abortion goes, and coupled with the reduction in personal responsibility and loosening of sexual mores, there was a criminal boom in the black underclass after abortion was legalized.

I knew her. She didn't get an abortion because she is against it. She is a member of the church of the brethren. She had another baby before this one who she gave up for adoption.

She isn't a true member of any Christian religion because she also claims to be Buddhist and Krishna. As for being 'anti-abortion', she is EXTREMELY liberal politically.

What the court case never explained is why, if she believed it was born dead, did she choke the newborn? There were marks around its neck. Why would she go through the trouble of giving birth in a bathroom, submerging its head underwater, choking it, and throwing it in the dumpster? This judge was an IDIOT.
