If your GPS is stolen

Re-key your house STAT! Fox reports car break-in thieves are finding houses to rob by looking up home addresses on the devices.
ps., better yet, don't leave your GPS device in the car in the first place.

I really would like to see a direct quote for "the detective". This is a new twist on an old urban legend, and just because someone might be wearing a policeman uniform doesn't mean they won't fall for them as well.

Why exactly would a smash and grab small stakes GPS thief completely change their MO to home bugalry/invasion just because they have an address of a GPS owner.

Stupid.

It is unclear to me why re-keying your home would do any good. It's not as if the GPS unit includes a way to unlock your doors.

Criminal -

"Hey, let me smash this window and steal that $200 GPS unit and pawn if for a day's worth of crack.

Gee, look at this, now I know where the previous owner of this thing lives... I bet since he owns a GPS unit, he has lot's of other thing in his house that can be sold for crack.

Let me take a hack cab out to Hunt Valley, and rob his house... because of course anyone with a GPS unit in there car wouldn't have any home security, and likely is too busy exploring the world to be home.....

Or maybe I'll just steal another GPS unit and smoke crack.

Leaving your GPS unit in full view in your car is much like the Hopkins students that are leaving their windows open. I scratch my head, this isn't Disneyworld.

I really want a Garmin 700 series in-vehicle GPS (with the cord) and I am too lazy to scour for desperate crackheads at 4AM. Where do these things end up?

Just check electronics for sale on Craigslist, ebay, some junkie walking up to you on the street, or your local pawn shop.
