Given the distinctly economic bent of several recent comment threads, I've asked economist Anirban Basu to participate in the first ever Baltimore Crime interview. Mr. Basu has graciously agreed to share his vast knowledge about both Baltimore and economics, and will be interviewed next week.
So, what do you want to know about crime, economics, and Baltimore? Ask your questions in the comments section to this post, and I will pass them on to Mr. Basu. While I won't guarantee that all of your questions will be answered, I'm genuinely excited to see what questions you all come up with.

The Sun has the story of Javon Thompson, the missing toddler whose body might've been found in a suitcase in Philly.
Dang. The HoCo police seem to have it out for teenagers and old ladies.
There was a badass car chase in the Southeastern yesterday.
Charges against Montay Jackson were dropped because the evidence is for shit and the SA office doesn't want to risk double jeopardy. Jackson was charged with manslaughter for dragging Charles Erdman to death after a traffic accident last year.
Preston Feaston was charged with assaulting Examiner photographer Arianne Starnes. If there were bystanders to the attack (and this is Baltimore, so of course there were bystanders), maybe they'll get probation like the two guys who egged on the beatdown of 73-year-old Sun journalist Carl Schoettler.
The nun said no, but the judge said yes, and Jennifer McMenamin spun it into an engrossing yarn:
Antajuan Wilson was indicted for the murder of Bryan Adams in Columbia. (If he had to kill a doppleganger of a bad Canadian singer, couldn't he have taken out someone named Celine Dion instead?)
Fred Mackler is a trip. A successful businessman and community philanthropist with a bunch of guns and drugs and bird bangers.

Sister Muriel Curran faced the man who shoved her to the ground and ripped away her purse three years ago. She quoted Scripture. She thanked him for the guilty plea that spared her a trial. And she asked a Baltimore County judge not to send him to prison ... Police officers waiting for other cases listened in astonishment... Charles R. Dodson still got 4 1/2 years. "The judge explained that he, like Sister Curran, believes in rehabilitation. But he said he also believes in punishment."

You'd think that with only two murders, Anna Ditkoff wouldn't have much news this week. You'd think that, and you'd be wrong.
A few more details about the child whose body was found in a suitcase in Philly.
A 15-year-old boy's mom took him to the police station and made him confess to shooting Jawan Keith Tasker in Annapolis.
The body that was found in a car in White Marsh has been ID'd as Jay Royden Alban, who has been missing since February.
Fred Mackler's pyrotechnics were behind the booms in Pikesville.
The alleged Edgewood kidnapper got caught.
More details on Agnes Welch's plan to give conflict resolution training to the city's youth. No word on whether the training will include target practice.
There's some danged fancy packaging for pot seeds.
Canton is taking a stand against the school board.

Burglary Report from Roland Park
[edited]
Hello all,thanks for sending, Ron
The house at 100 Woodlawn Road, on the corner of Cold Spring and Woodlawn, was burglarized yesterday afternoon at around 3 pm. Randy S. came home during the burglary, finding a person or persons in his basement. Randy was very smart and got out of the house as soon as he realized there was someone in it, and he immediately called 911.
The burglar got in by breaking the panes out of a small window into the butler’s pantry, a window that faces Cold Spring. He/they crawled through the window. They took Randy’s laptop outside and tried, without succeeding, to log into his wireless network. They brought the laptop back into the house and were in the basement when they were scared off by Randy’s return. Randy told me that nothing else was taken (not the jars of coins, any of his wife’s jewelry, their CDs or electronic equipment) and nothing was ransacked. Randy and Priya’s alarm wasn’t turned on.
A house on Ridgewood Road was broken into in the middle of the day last week and a laptop was stolen. That house had its alarm turned on and there was a small dog in the house.
Randy plans to point out the similarities between the two incidents to the police. Just in case this is a developing trend, it’d be best to avoid leaving laptops where they can be seen through a window, if at all possible.
Baltimore baby's remains found in Philly?
The remains of a baby were found in a suitcase behind a rowhouse in South Philly. The baby might be a child who went missing from Baltimore in 2006 or 2007. (Thanks, Burger!)

A body was found in a car in White Marsh, and WJZ is the only place I could find it reported. Oh, maybe the bloggers at B who replaced the Sun's Baltimore County crime reporters will write about it!
Sweet! Operation Crippler is underway.
A kidnapping victim in Edgewood escaped after his attackers crashed into a lightpole.
Lots and lots of stories on alleged perv Timothy Rhodes. Just remember, innocent until proven guilty, right?
Hmmmm... a PI hired by Norman Stamp's widow asks an interesting question that ends with a preposition: "Did (Stamp) have the brass knuckles on as they say? How do you reach for a gun if you have knuckles on?"
The morning news is full of fine questions: "Where is the outrage in Baltimore?"
Mike Castillo was indicted, and MoCo police say they followed proper procedures in responding to three desperate calls from the kids' mother.
Six incarcerated teens were charged as adults after they responded to a counseling session by beating the crap out of the counselor.
Missing witness Ronald P. Johnson Jr. got a year of home detention and was ordered to await the trial of one of the alleged participants in the 2004 Randallstown High shooting.
John Scott Bealefeld is going to the crazy house after pleading to second-degree murder.
There were some freaky booms happening in Pikesville, but relax, Bernadette Woods: "Baltimore County Police have arrested Frederick Lee Mackler, 59, of the 8000-block of Brynmor Court, 21208. He was identified by police last night for being responsible for a multitude of complaints that the community made concerning loud explosion sounds in the area."

Two Years for Murder Over Handgun
At a hearing today Crystal Nikkita Newby, 22, of the 2900 block of Southland Avenue, pled guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter. Judge Timothy J. Doory sentenced Newby to eight years in prison suspend all but two years and four years probation.
On September 14, 2007 Newby fatally stabbed Qasim Kabah, 29, on the front porch of a house located in the 2500 block of Terra Firma Road. Newby and Kabah had been arguing over the illegal sale of a 9mm Tech 9 handgun and that argument became physical, leading to the stabbing.
Assistant State’s Attorney James Francamano prosecuted this case.

Mark Castillo indicted
Hot from the SA's office, news that (alleged) kid-killer Mark Castillo was indicted.
State’s Attorney Patricia C. Jessamy announced that the Baltimore City Grand Jury indicted Mark Castillo, 42, of Rockville, Maryland for three counts of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death today.
Court documents allege on March 30, 2008, Mark Castillo drowned his three children Anthony Castillo, 6, Austin Castillo, 4, and Athena Castillo, 2, in the bathtub of the Marriott Hotel in downtown Baltimore City.
An arraignment is scheduled for May 19, 2008 before Judge W. Michel Pierson, Room 329 Courthouse East.
The case will be prosecuted by Julie Drake, Chief of the Felony Family Violence Division.

A woman's body was found in a rowhouse on N. Milton St., but the initial investigation shows she might be an OD rather than a murder victim. An autopsy will be performed.

Guilty Plea, Indictment in Christine Richardson Murder
Lloyd Chase, 17, of the 2100 block of McHenry Street pleaded guilty today to "accessory after a fact to murder" as his trial was scheduled to begin in Baltimore Circuit Court. Sentencing will be held sub-curia until after he testifies in a related case. Chase will face a maximum penalty of five years in prison. The Baltimore City Grand jury indicted Chase August 3, 2007 for first-degree murder and other counts. The Grant Jury also indicted Calvin Puryear, 20, of the 2600 block of Dulaney Street.
Court documents allege that Puryear and Chase are responsible for stabbing Christine Richardson, 15, left, on July 10, 2007 in her home in the 300 block of S. Fulton Avenue. Richardson was stabbed several times and her throat slashed following an argument with the two suspects. Richardson died the same day.

The Demons Did It
Stephen Todd Nelson, presumably recovered from his cleaning-product coma and accused of throwing his three-year-old son, Turner, into the Patapsco, pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse resulting in death at his arraignment this morning. The court scheduled a July 29, 2008 trial date at 11 a.m., before Judge Robert Kershaw.

Here's the story of Norman Stamp, the police officer who was shot and killed at Haven Place. His last words were "I'm a cop."
Jean Marabella: "If you care about Baltimore, you should read the transcript of what (Judge) Young said... . No, don't just read it, clip it out of the paper or print it on your computer and put it in your pocket. Or stick it in the frame of your mirror, forward it to someone, do something other than just let it pass unheard."
I don't often say this, but Jean's correct. Here's the link again in case you blew off reading Judge David Young's comments.
In the "it'd be funny if it weren't true" department, an Examiner photographer was assaulted outside Reginald F. Lewis High School as she was doing a story on school violence.
Nancy Schmidt was hardly alone: lots of seniors are victimized every day.
Catherine Palmer's bail was lowered to 10 grand.
The dude who crashed his car and killed himself, his girlfriend, and her family on Rt. 1 was here to collect an inheritance, which he and his lady wisely spent on crack, heroin, and PCP.
Espinosa and Canela may be granted an appeal.
While it's awesome that Garland Williams led the construction of a Browning family memorial garden at Cockeysville Middle School, it pisses me off that things like this never seem to happen in the city. I mean, where's the memorial garden for the Dawson family?
If this batch of thieves pool their resources, they can totally start a kickass band with one of them fancy MySpace pages.
Liquor Board chairman Stephan Fogleman slapped Anthony Triplin's hand and then renewed the license for Trip's Place, which is the alcoholic side of Club Choices.

Damn. An on-duty cop shot and killed an off-duty cop who drew his weapon in the parking lot of the prestigious Haven Place.
I forgot to link to the Ink yesterday. This week, Anna tells us that the dead landlord has been added to the city's murder tally, and that the (alleged) killers had a lovely evening with their family the night after they (allegedly) killed the man. Anna also ID'd the man who was killed on 6th St. as Stanley Johnson.
The flaming tow truck driver is home from the hospital, and the douchebags who set him on fire are wanted for attempted murder.
Fucking Yankees fans, stealing our cell phones and medication and stuff.
God and Pat Jessamy both seem to support Jolita Berry's decision to file charges against the 15-year-old student who beat her down.
15-year-old student body vice-president Nakita McDaniels led two other group assaults on lone girls. One day, Nakita, the mayorship shall be yours. 'Til then, though, your ass is going to jail.
Two other students from the bus attack are suing because their bus privileges were revoked. Maybe Dr. Todd should sue for having his driving privileges revoked.
Jason Allen got hit with murder charges for allegedly killing Jeff Payne during a Valentine's Day party near Morgan State.
The alleged conspiracy against former Southwestern flex squad leader Sgt. Robert Smith deepens.
I love the fact that I can read a headline like "Parents fault Abingdon school over handling of gun incident" and wonder if people are pissed because the school did too much or didn't do enough.

Life in Prison for Juanita Robinson
At a hearing today, Judge John C. Themelis sentenced Juanita Robinson, 28, of the 800 block of Bradhurst Road to life in prison. A Baltimore City jury convicted Robinson February 14, 2008 of first-degree murder. On March 31, 2007 Juanita Robinson shot Andre McBride, 21, in the head in the 6600 Knottwood Court. Robinson was the victim’s girlfriend and was the last person seen with McBride before the shooting. McBride died later at Sinai Hospital.
Robinson previously served six months for killing 16-year-old Derrick Colbert (see last para).

Two guys on the side of 695 set a tow truck driver on fire yesterday morning. (Sun coverage.)
In a completely shocking and unexpected turn of events, someone got shot on N. Carey St.
The fifth graders are packing heat.
"This is why I'm disgusted. The system has failed the people in the community. The Police Department is suffering from a lack of oversight and a lack of character. Today was a victory, no doubt, and it shows that an average lay citizen can bring charges and follow through it with limited resources and still bring a guilty verdict." (Examiner coverage.)
Poor Vernice Harris. Nobody wanted to help her. Nobody cared. So how could it possibly be her fault that she gave methadone to little Bryanna? Poor, poor Vernice.
Joseph McInnis Jr. got nailed for a rape 24 years after the fact. As part of his plea deal, charges related to a murder 21 years ago were dropped.

Police said a break-in might have been the motivation for the murder of 74-year-old Nancy Schmidt early yesterday morning. (Examiner coverage.)
The Rev. Rush "noticed a lot of things that was out of order" at the fatal memorial service for Anthony Izzard. My guess is he was referring to the gunshots, not the noun/verb mismatch.

An 11-year-old was robbed at gunpoint on E. Monument St.
An AAC cop got into a gunfight during a Brooklyn Park traffic stop.
Drunk Dr. Todd will get off with a year or so in jail, some AA meetings, and a $5,000 donation.

Murder By Funeral
Two men were shot, one fatally and one in the buns, outside of Unity United Methodist Church in the 1700 block of W. Lexington St. following a funeral for Anthony Lamont Izard Sr. (aka Anthony Izzard), victim #53.
Seriously?!
Says the big E, "City prosecutors in Baltimore are refusing to prosecute homicide cases that don't have the cooperation of at least two witnesses."

Thanks to The Wire, most outsiders know Baltimore as a violent slum; this blog does little to change that. You can use its police-blotter-style entries ("Man shot on the corner of W. Lafayette and N. As Galt posted, WBAL reports that 74-year-old Emily Schmidt was stabbed to death in the 200 block of West 31st Street at about 5:30 a.m. today.

UPDATE: Turns out her name was Nancy, not Emily.

As Galt reported in the comments yesterday, a man was murdered early yesterday morning on 6th St. in the Southern.
Baltimore City is safer than any of the surrounding counties.*
Edward and Catherine Palmer allegedly killed their landlord in self-defense. Then they burned his dead body in self-defense, borrowed a car in self-defense, and dumped the landlord's body in self-defense.
If you decide to go-a-killin', make sure there's only one witness.
The BPD gave the feds evidence related to the shooting of Edward Lamont Hunt.
A skateboarder broke into Eastern Technical High School, removed a door, and used it as a skateboard ramp. It wasn't all fun and games for skateboarders, though, because a teenage boy's board was stolen during an implied armed robbery in Parkville.
The opening six words of Kelsey Volkmann's story make me wonder how many teachers aren't tired of students assaulting them.
* Based on the number of non-fatal shootings and armed robberies reported in the Sun for the weekend of April 19-20, 2008. A 22-year-old man was shot in the leg in Marley (AAC), a 45-year-old man was robbed while walking in Columbia early yesterday morning, and two men were shot in two separate incidents -- one of which was a home invasion -- in Baltimore County on Saturday night. Meanwhile, there was only one non-fatal shooting reported in the City: a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg on N. Robinson St. on Saturday morning.

Kerri King got off on a HarCo driving charge that should've sent her to prison. She's still being held in the city for killing Courtney Brooks.

Kerri King got off on a HarCo driving charge that should've sent her to prison. She's still being held in the city for killing Courtney Brooks.

More Teen Hooligans!
Yikes, a 15-year-old boy stabbed a 14-year-old boy in the neck and back with a pair of scissors at Lemmel Middle School.
Har! "Police charged five Montgomery County teens and one adult [last week] with being linked to what authorities said was a scheme to steal guns from a student's home and sell them to classmates, a sale broken up when a 14-year-old potential customer accidentally fired a bullet into the wall of a restroom stall."
... and one brokedown stripper! If you've ever doubted that booze is bad for the complexion, check out this picture of Kerri King (alleged hit-and-run killer of Officer Courtney Brooks).

Tavon Smith was fatally shot yesterday afternoon in the 2900 block of Garrison Blvd. in the Northwestern.
Who needs stupid shows like CSI when you've got the Southwestern? Seriously, if the shit going on over there were in a Mark Wahlberg movie, I'd dismiss it as bad screenwriting. (Here's yesterday's article on the police shooting, and a couple of paragraphs in the Examiner.)
We're not prejudiced against either side of town, though. Last night, a dude got shot on the west side, and a dude got shot on the east side.
Are they spreading shitty sludge around poor black neighborhoods in Baltimore, or are they treating the soil with compost to help eliminate toxins and reduce risks of lead poisoning?
Cynthia McKay was convicted for killing her boyfriend and setting his body on fire. She faces 30 years. (Sun coverage.)
Tyron Montray McGowan admitted to killing Kwame Travon Johnson last month in Annapolis.
PDJ: Daddy likes to touch his teenage daughter and watch her take showers. Maybe some nice men in prison will like touching daddy and watching daddy take showers.
Rape now occurs the moment a woman says no and she is ignored, even if it's in the middle of a deed to which she's already consented.
Some Fredneck dumped the bodies of more than 70 dogs in the woods.

Third Trial Starts for Erik Stoddard
A third trial has begun for Erik Stoddard, accused of the murder of three-year-old Calen Faith Dirubbo in 2002. Stoddard's first conviction was thrown out because a toddler's "utterance" was considered hearsay by the CSA. Here's info on the case from the second trial which concluded in May of last year; that conviction was also thrown out. Reported the Sun last year:
... the judge in the case ordered a new trial, saying he should have asked jurors during the selection process whether they had any racial prejudice against the defendant. This case has inspired some interesting comments over the years.
Circuit Judge Allen L. Schwait's decision was based on a little-known but sweeping 1999 Maryland Court of Appeals ruling that a defendant has an absolute right to question jurors about racial bias, even in cases with no apparent racial dynamic.
Stoddard, 26, is white. Calen Faith Dirubbo, the 3-year-old who was fatally beaten in June 2002, was white. All of the state witnesses in the case were white. The attorneys and the judge were white. The jury was made up of eight blacks and four whites.

Hot diggity damn. Only one new murder in the Ink (that of Anthony Izzard), and details on Yolanda Brown (who was ruled a homicide victim on 4/8). One of the other men who was shot at the same time as Izzard was apparently struck by a stray bullet while sitting in his house.
A boy was shot in the face this morning in West Baltimore.
18-year-old Charles Jakes didn't mean to kill his 14-year-old girlfriend Shawndreta, who was found lying in a bed naked from the waist down. Jakes accidentally shot himself in the thumb at the same time. Too bad he didn't accidentally shoot himself in the head. Congratulations Charlie, you are the douchebag du jour.
The burned body of an unidentified man has been ruled as a homicide, but police aren't releasing the cause of death.
Despite what the Jessup teenagers who got shot say, the cops say they only fired one shot.
PDJ: Scott Carpenter of Dundalk pleaded guilty to receiving kiddie porn. Maybe Chuckie Jakes can shoot off Carpenter's wang.
The state dropped charges against Patrick Byers so the feds could wholeheartedly nail him. Or so we hope. (Byers was indicted for killing witness Carl Lackl.)
Rapist Eugene Waller got 20 years.

Evening Update
City Officer Mark Spila was shot in the upper hip during a routine traffic stop around Poplar Grove Street and Lanvale Avenue in the SW. The suspect is still at large.
(TG the bullet didn't hit the "ephemeral artery"!!
UPDATE: the officer is recovering from surgery, and WBAL corrected the typo)
Eighteen-year-old Charles Jakes has been arrested for the murder of 14-year-old Shawndreta Griffin.
Party is sure to be a verb as "the b Street Team" holds a "Happy Hour" tonight at "The Green [sic] Turtle" in Towson. (Yes, I just posted that for no other reason than to annoy you).

Jee-zus. Practically every headline in the local section of the Sun is a crime story. I may be the only blogger cheering for the crime staff over there, but dammit, I'm cheering loud. Meanwhile, the Examiner site has been totally redesigned, and I kinda like it. Anyhoo... on to the wacky hijinks of us Baltimorons.
The girl who was killed on N. Patterson Park Ave. yesterday morning has been ID'd as Shawndreta Griffin. Shawndreta was actually 14, not 15 as previously reported. (I drove down that street last night, and it is one of the bleakest streets I've seen in this city. Greenmount Ave. is like a healthy and thriving neighborhood in comparison.)
A typo contributed to the murder of Jeffrey (aka Jeffery) Clinton Butler.
Antajuan Wilson confessed. Hopefully they spelled his name right.
The boy killed by the wayward van on Saturday has been ID'd as 3-year-old Kyrell Sellers. Police are investigating the possibility that the two cars might have been racing.
The Griffins of Rodgers Forge were indicted for murdering their 2-year-old son. (It's taking all my restraint to not write something like "HA! Serves you right, fuckers!" Oh... shoot... I just wrote it. Oh well.)
In case you missed MJB's post yesterday, DNA evidence led police to 46-year-old Roger Ervin, aka the alleged Roland Park Rapist, pictured at right. (Despite my challenges to Lori Barrett at "b," there's nothing today on the Parkville rapist. Oh well.)
There was a bizarre stabbing/wrestling incident in the can at Douglass High School yesterday.
In other stabby news, a man was knifed by a relative at a family get-together in Edgewood on Friday night.
If the schools weren't run as if a herd of lobotomized cattle held power on North Ave., Andres Alonso might have better luck getting volunteers. Oh, and he also wants to quadruple funding for gifted students. Does videotaping the beatdown of a teacher count as "gifted?"
There's something to Alonso's statement about volunteers, though, as the Towson/Cherry Hill partnership suggests.
Ick. People in Jessup want to castrate the police. Oh, castigate. That makes more sense. My bad. (Despite my stupid commentary, it's an interesting article. Citizens are pissed about the police shooting in the Pleasant Chase community last week.)
Can we start a new feature? The Douchebag du jour? If so, Sanford M. Abrams totally gets my vote.
The honorary DDJ award goes to the Fells Point double-parker who attacked the woman writing him a traffic ticket.
More fires in Harson County.

First-Degree Conviction in Daniel Savage Murder
Today a Baltimore City Circuit Court jury convicted Alton Teel of the 3700 block of Bonview Street of first-degree murder for fatally shooting Daniel Savage in February 2008 in the 1500 block of N. Bradford Street in East Baltimore.
At approximately 8:40 a.m. on February 21, 2007 officers and medics responded to the 1500 block of N. Bradford Street where the victim Daniel Savage was found lying in the street with multiple bullet shot wounds. Mr. Savage succumbed to his injuries.
Assistant State’s Attorney Theresa Shaffer prosecuted this case. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

Roland Park Rapist Caught!
For real this time (we hope)!
"Roger Ervin, of the 3500 block of Dudley Ave., faces numerous charges of rape, sex offenses, assault, handgun and burglary charges, police said. He was charged on Sunday after detectives linked DNA samples taken from the victim."
Here's links to the stories from last August, (amazingly, the ones from the Examiner still work) and a picture of Ervin at right. (Thanks anon.)

Fatal homicide on east side
WJZ reports that "Baltimore Police are investigating a fatal homicide in East Baltimore. ... Police say a male was shot in the head."
Nick at the Sun tells us that a 15-year-old girl was shot in the head in the 1900 block of N. Patterson Park Ave. (which, for the record, is nowhere near Patterson Park). A suspect is in custody. A construction worker at the scene said he saw six or seven kids being taken out of the house, and two of them were young enough to be placed in baby seats.
And yes, it appears that this was, indeed, a fatal homicide.
(Thanks to Mr. Mephistopheles for the info)

Anthony Izzard, one of the three men who was shot on Friday night in Franklin Square, has died.
The burnt body of an unidentified man was found yesterday morning near Middlesex Elementary in Baltimore County.
In West Baltimore, a van was hit by another car and was forced onto the sidewalk where it hit two little boys (one of whom died). In true Baltimore style, onlookers then beat the woman who was driving the van. The depth of the anger in this city is truly terrifying sometimes.
Two men tried to rape a 15-year-old girl in Cockeysville.
Olesker talked with people who were paying respects where Bryan Adams was murdered in Columbia, and Antajuan Wilson was arrested for Adams' murder.
The war on drugs is alive and well in Baltimore.

For a fugitive riding public transportation, it didn't pay to be cheap. A North Carolina bank robbery suspect is in custody after he was caught taking a free ride on Baltimore's light rail. A ticket on the train costs $1.60. But the Maryland Transit Administration says 58-year-old Isaac Ray Dunn didn't have one when an MTA police officer asked passengers to show their tickets on Thursday afternoon at the North Linthicum stop south of the city. After arresting Dunn for failing to buy a ticket, police did a check for outstanding warrants and found out he’s wanted for a bank robbery in Charlotte, North Carolina. Police turned Dunn over to U.S. Marshals.

April 12
As reported by Bmore in the comments, three men were shot last night in Franklin Square.
An employee at a McDonald's in Catonsville was stabbed by a co-worker yesterday morning. Another co-worker was arrested for offering to hide the stabber.
Bealefeld's statement that the murder rate is dropping holds a bit more water than then-acting Police Commissioner Hamm's statement to the Baltimore Criminal Justice Coordinating Council on (or about) March 9, 2005 that Baltimore had "finally turned the corner on violent crime." Turning Hamm's corner was kinda like turning from N. Carey St. onto W. Mosher St.
Eugene Waller may have a history of violent sex crimes, and he may have gotten away with some things due to technicalities and bureaucracies, and he may not be doing life for his latest attack, but it certainly wasn't a random rape.
Marcus Crandell could get up to life in prison after pleading guilty to a bit of fiery street revenge.
"My parents are gone, and he's still here."
Hmmm... if female Navy officers can pay off debt by working as hookers, how about middle-aged civilians with receding hairlines, man-boobs, and pedophile beards? Uh, because, you know, I've got a friend who might be interested.
I can totally see how this'll go down. First, someone on the City Council will read Jill Rosen's article about kids who videotape school fights. Then they'll propose a law that banishes the Interwebs and the World Wide Net and MyTube from within Baltimore's city limits. Then a Web Offenders' Registry will go into place. Six months later, MJB will get arrested for illegally making a blog post to Baltimore Crime (because we're, like, totally revolutionaries that way), and the City Council will pat themselves on the back for making the city a safer place.
Goddamn, I'm getting cynical. I saw the headline "Baltimore Community Celebrates Milestone" and my first thought was, 'What? Nobody picked up a hooker for three entire hours in Pigtown?'

Blotters like this one are what make me pissed at the Sun. I will grudgingly accept that three shootings and an armed robbery get stuck in the Blotter, but when a woman gets attacked and raped at her home in Parkville and the story is stuck between a stolen GPS and some stolen power tools, well... somebody at the Sun needs to pull their head out of their ass, post haste.
Well, at least one shooting was deserving of its very own story in the Sun.
A man was stabbed at the Whores You Came in On bar in Fell's Point.
... and WBAL now has a Web cast! The future is now! (Thanks Winston--MJB)
Apparently, it's Jolita's fault that she got attacked, because she lacked the skills to defuse the situation. Maybe next, we can blame it on what she was wearing. The good news is that our fearless leaders "will be working to provide students with anger management resources they need..."
Of course, the school system will never admit that maybe there's a serious problem going on. Maybe they should talk to Yvette Brebnor, who was repeatedly attacked by a fourth-grader. The good news is that our recent cases of school violence are getting some national coverage, so maybe someone will be humiliated into making some meaningful changes. (Start holding your breath... now.)
The guy who got shot by police on Wednesday night ain't doing so hot. Meanwhile, the men and women of the BPD are pretty effective with their firearms.
One of the boys who was "accidentally" shot by a HoCo cop in Jessup claims the cop accidentally shot them twice.
There's a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of Bryan Adams' killer.
Shaggy Taylor got life + 20 for killing Joseph Miller over some gang graffiti. Like a good little doo-bee, Taylor wore his gang colors to trial.
Octavius Savage was found guilty of killing his 64-year-old roommate and chopping the body in half.
Yesterday, Christopher Harryman got 17.5 years for being part of the Remington Mob.
The NY livery cab driver who dropped baby Daniella at a fire station is free if he can behave for six months. Daniella is the daughter of a teenage runaway from Baltimore, and the cab driver conspired with the teenage girl's aunt on how to get rid of the baby.
Why do we put up with this kind of poo from our leaders? Stop behaving like a petulant child, Conaway, and do your freaking job.

We recently lost Kevin Bacon to a murder, and Billy Crudup is up on murder charges. Now, Bryan Adams just got killed in Columbia.
Oh, goodie. The guy who killed Mister George, a grandfather / Korean War vet / generally well-regarded citizen, got 30 years. It's too bad he wasn't busy doing time for his other murder conviction instead of being out on the street killing old men.
Someone on Gertrude St. in the Rosemont section of the Southwestern learned that it's probably not smart to shoot at cops.
53-year-old Russell Lockett III was attacked in Annapolis on March 15 and died two days later. His death has been ruled a homicide.
Violence in our schools? That's unpossible!
An (allegedly) drunk-ass Baltimore City employee (allegedly) stole a cab in Annapolis.
Is it defamation if I call someone a douchebag?
El Cynic notes that the story of the attack of art teacher Jolita Berry was on the "Today" show this morning. She'll also be on "Nancy Grace" tonight at 8 and 10 p.m.

Kerri King indicted!!!
It's not often that info from the State's Attorney's office makes me happy, but this does:
Baltimore, MD – April 9, 2008 – State's Attorney Patricia C. Jessamy announced today that the Baltimore City Grand Jury returned indictments against Kerri J. King, 35, of the 100 block of Danford Drive, Elkton, Maryland on charges of auto manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Court documents allege that on December 31, 2007, Kerri King struck and killed Officer Courtney Brooks of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department as he directed holiday traffic at the intersection of Exit 53 on northbound Interstate 95. Ms. King is also charged with driving while impaired and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The maximum penalty for auto manslaughter is 10 years in prison. The maximum penalty for leaving the scene of an accident is also 10 years. An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but an allegation of criminal wrongdoing.
In case you moved here yesterday...
Don't leave a GPS system or an iPod in your car. Or your phone. or change. Or your school books, CDs, pens, candy wrappers, Kleenex boxes, soda cans or week-old newspapers. However, even if your car is empty and your doors are unlocked, you may well get your winder broken anyway. The system considers that vandalism, so even if by some wacky coincidence the perp is caught in the act, he'll be out of CBIF within hours. That's why smash-n-grab is such a popular low-risk, high-profit venture.
Yet, if you staked out your car and shot said vandal in the knees, you'll be the one to get sued and go to jail.
"That's why they call it the criminal justice system, it serves to benefit the criminal." -- Some cop

The City Paper covers the murder of Gerrald Megginson, whose body was found by the railroad tracks near the B&O Railroad Museum during the search for the Blackwell brothers. Unless I missed it, I didn't see any other news source follow up on the identity or killing of Megginson.
The body of Yolanda Brown was dumped in Gwynns Falls Park on March 20, after she was strangled.
Two eighth-graders at a West Baltimore middle school got the shit beat out of them by at least 10 other kids because one of them was wearing sneakers with red trim.
Two 13-year-old boys from Bethlehem Christian Day School are obviously not understanding the whole "Jesus" thing.
An art teacher was beaten after she told a female student to sit down, and the attack was recorded on a cell phone camera. The school apparently did nothing after the beating Friday, but now school police they'll "begin an investigation."
A bullet grazed the head of a man who was standing in front of the Save-A-Lot grocery store on Erdman Ave.
Michael Thompson, the teenage victim of a hit-and-run in Parkville, has already had six surgeries and won't be able to join the Navy as he was planning to do.
There are a lot of women out there named Violet Marie Gaston, and at least two of them really need to lay off the rock.
The Mungo family are a bunch of misunderstood angels.
For the first time since its inception, criminal charges were made using the new gun offender registry.
Damon M. Jackson of Haverdeegrayce was arrested and charged with robbing and killing Alan Zurita on the side of I-95 last week. Jackson also got shot during the robbery, but he was driven to the hospital by alleged accomplice Demetrius Lovelace instead of being left to die by the side of the road.
There's a disposition hearing (whatever that is, pardon my ignorance) for Thomas Taylor scheduled for Thursday morning in front of Judge Prevas.
Ewwww. There's an unregistered child molester out there (pictured at right) whose nickname is Pooh Bear. That's disgusting on so many levels, I don't know where to start. (His beard is kinda disgusting, too, but I've been known to sport the Unabomber / Iron & Wine beard, so I'm not one to talk.)
PDJ: There's now a federal case against Ronald Glenn Draper Jr., who not only stored kiddie porn on his work computer at his state government job, but also allegedly molested two male relatives.
You know it's hard out here for an innocent young black man.

At 2:59PM on March 1, 2006 in the 3300 block of Oakfield Avenue Taylor, a self described blood, shot and killed Joseph Miller, 26. Miller, Taylor and others were arguing over Bloods graffiti located on the wall of a corner store in the neighborhood. Taylor, who was wearing red, left the scene. He returned with a gun, having changed his clothing to black. Miller remained at the scene in an attempt to break up the argument over the graffiti. Taylor hid behind some bushes, stood up, and fatally shot Miller and seriously wounded another.

A body that might've been a man but maybe was a woman was found in the charred remains of a house in the 2000 block of Guilford Ave. An autopsy will be performed.
A man was shot in the thigh on The Alameda early this morning. The Sun's description of the location reminds me of an 8th grade story problem. "If a man is two blocks north of East Northern Parkway, walks west on Walker to Northwood, then walks south toward East Lake, what direction will he be facing when he gets shot?"
Two teens were accidentally shot by police during a drug investigation in HoCo's "well-kept Pleasant Chase neighborhood." (Are there poorly kept neighborhoods in HoCo? Shit, even the trailer parks on Rt. 1 are classier than my city neighborhood.)
The Blackwells don't Talkwell.
PDJ: Michael S. Pollard's roommate at the Naval Academy described the horrors of opening a file named "Boy Party" while borrowing Pollard's computer. The roommate made a point of telling the court that "It looked like 13-, 14-year-olds engaging in sexual acts ... but I'm no expert in child pornography."
Hey, finally some good people of Park Heights got recognized in the news!
Wow. Did Marty Bass really compare dropping viewership for TV news stations to bombing Hiroshima? It's been a while since I busted out with my favorite word, but I've been provoked: Marty, you're a douchebag.

Afternoon
The man who was shot on McElderry St. last night died. It's still unclear whether he was shot by police or by a disappearing gunfighter.
A 17-year-old may be paralyzed after he became a hit-and-run victim while crossing McClean Blvd. in a crosswalk last Tuesday night. Police are looking for information about a U-Haul whose occupants stopped to eat at the McDonald's on McClean Rd. and Perring Pkwy. in Parkville around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday April 1. The U-Haul says "Illinois" and has a picture of a really freaky looking creature called a Tully Monster on the side.
Let's see if I understand this. Guy #1 got murdered, and alleged murderer #1 went to jail. But then witness #1 got murdered along with guy #2 by alleged murderers #2 and #3. Without witness #1, alleged murderer #1 got released because there wasn't enough evidence against him. Meanwhile, alleged murderer #2 went to jail, while alleged murderer #3 couldn't be found. But there's not enough evidence against alleged murderer #2 to indict him, so today he was set free. So, guy #1, witness #1, and guy #2 are all dead, and nobody's in jail. Sweet.
Sarah Kreager pleaded guilty to one count of attempted drug distribution.

The body of missing Pikesville man Ryan Spencer was found at TownMall in Westminster, but police aren't saying whether or not it was a suicide.
A man was shot in the 3100 block of McElderry St. after he and his gunfighter pal refused to drop their weapons when the cops told them to play nice.
In the Blotter, a boyfriend got shot in the face by an ex-boyfriend, a 15-year-old boy ran away when shots were fired on N. Ellwood St. before realizing he'd been shot, and a man in White Marsh got his stab on with a steak knife.
A man was stabbed on a Pikesville playground on Sunday morning. (The same article covers some more Bel Air arson.)
The woman who locked herself in her trunk and claimed she was abducted was trying to cover the fact that she's the victim of domestic abuse. Police aren't charging her for the false report, and the domestic assault is being investigated.
More trouble on the 27, this time from assholes outside the bus.
The powers-that-be say that homicides are dropping because "police and prosecutors work together to identify possible violent offenders -- such as probationers or registered gun offenders -- and attempt to arrest them for whatever they can." The powerless-that-be say it's the same shit, different day.
Crack good. Heroin better.
Thanks to the increasing size of my man-boobs, I'm totally going to try this when I have jury duty in a few weeks. (I'm kidding about trying to get out of jury duty. Not about the man-boobs, though.)

Five women were indicted as part of the big Tree Top Piru crackdown, so Julie B. takes a look at "Michelle Hell," one scary "Pirette."
No charges yet in the Blackwell abductions.
The female remains found in a shallow grave near Emmitsburg were positively ID'd as Deysi Benitez, who looks like she was yet another victim of her husband Pedro's violence. (I'm really late posting about this one.)
Post: Demented dad Mark Castillo bought poison, duct tape at Home Depot, tried to sell caged Furby by the side of the road. Amy Castillo "didn't think divorce was an option because of her religious beliefs," though she apparently changed her mind at some point.
With the death of Tom Lewis, the Catonsville Nine are now the Catonsville Five. Lewis did more than three years for his civil disobedience in protest of the Vietnam War.

Luke looks at the 22 murders in "a month marked by brutal crimes," but says that "police see signs of hope. The 50 homicides in the first three months of 2008 are the fewest in Baltimore City since 1985."
A guy got shot in the head yesterday in East Baltimore. Despite Galt's comment in yesterday's comments that the man died, there's nothing about it in today's news.
For the second time in two weeks, a body was found along the train tracks in Carroll Park. Homicide is investigating, and they say it's not one of the...
... two abducted teenage brothers who are still missing, and facts continue to trickle down to the public: a woman was sexually assaulted, the boys come from a family of convicted drug dealers and/or users, and each of the two boys has been arrested five times.
In other abduction news, some crazy-ass lady faked her own abduction.
Amy Castillo says that the court system failed her and her kids, and it sure is hard to disagree.
HarCo churches are hoping that some upcoming community events will help stop the violence in Edgewood.
Rasul Brown got 75 years for killing Marcus McDowell, a teenage boy with no criminal record who was trying to help a friend who was fighting with Brown.
17-year-old Dupree Williams pleaded guilty to murdering 18-year-old Jerome Hughes on Halloween in Annapolis.
William Floyd Crudup got 11 years for dealing crack, and he hasn't even been tried for shooting two cops in 2005.
A 19-year-old got 35 years for shooting at cops while riding his dirt bike.
PDJ: William Lee Burdette Jr. of Reisterstown pleaded guilty to distributing kiddie porn.

The kindergarteners at Forcey Christian School miss Anthony.
Jeffrey Butler was wanted by police when he was murdered. The story demonstrates both flaws in the system and the fact that, as BPD spokesman Sterling Clifford said, "It's very difficult to find these kids, and sometimes the kids don't realize that the best thing for their safety is to be in the system."
The teenage brothers who were abducted in Catonsville are still missing, and police say the two boys have a "long criminal history."
"The FBI and city robbery detectives have released photographs of a man they suspect of stealing more than $10,000 in a string of recent bank robberies." Hmmm... not that the web version of the Sun bothered to run the photos or anything.
If more people used Netflix, the dude who robbed the Blockbuster in Cockeysville would be S.O.L.
These damned teenagers today have it easy. When I was their age, kids had to walk five miles uphill through the snow to set fire to the elementary school.

Evening
A federal grand jury indicted Brian Keith Rose, 22, Tuesday in connection with the January 2006 murder of Warren Fleming, victim of an attempted carjacking. An archive of Sun stories on the case.
In PGC, a 12-year-old boy killed a man who was attacking his mother.
"The Board of Public Works has approved a $400,000 settlement in a case of alleged racial profiling by the Maryland State Police, ending a lengthy legal battle that began almost 10 years ago."
Did you know? Church's Fried Chicken is owned by an Islamic investment bank, now being sued by a BWI franchisee for their late-breaking anti-pork stance.
Meanwhile, "The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has revived the workplace discrimination claim of a Muslim man who says he endured harassing taunts, such as being called 'Taliban' and 'towel head,' while working at Sunbelt Rentals Inc. in Gaithersburg."
"I wouldn't put you on because it really did, it happened just this way

Anna D. takes on the most homicidal week of the year so far in the Ink, with nearly 20% of 2008's murders occurring (or being ruled as homicide) during the past week. Some "highlights:" April Montford's incredibly horrible death of neglect has been ruled homicide, but the State's Attorney's office has yet to decide whether or not to charge her daughters with murder; the man killed on Wilkens on 3/23 was ID'd as 18-year-old Jeffrey Butler; and the man killed in Carrollton Ridge on 3/27 was ID'd as Tyrone Bahia.
Police are looking for the man who shot Alan Zurita and left him on the side of I-95, then shot another man and drove him to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. Zurita died about two hours after being found, and the other man survived.
There's a tribute to Zach Sowers on YouTube.
For you friends, family, and supporters of Zach, don't forget tonight's event at Sonar.
Mark Castillo is being held without bail. There's a picture of his kids with Santa Claus that just hurts to look at.
Kane has a helluva good column today.
Two teenage brothers were kidnapped early yesterday morning when six armed men invaded a "flop house" in the 600 block of Plymouth Rd. in Catonsville. As dramatic as that story sounds, something -- like the fact that other residents of the house wouldn't initially cooperate with police -- tells me there's more than meets the eye.
A man was shot twice in the stomach last night in the 2200 block of W. Lexington St.
Anthony Monroe was found guilty for murdering Milan Andrew Walker last January. He faces life plus 25 years, which in Baltimore City means he'll be out within a few years.
Beware of bearded NASCAR fans, especially if you're into cardboard cutouts.

April 1
Mark Castillo admitted to being a completely worthless human killing his own three kids, and said "I know what I did was bad." Yeah, asshole, it was.
There are lots of stories related to Castillo's triple-murder: The Sun looks at the couple's divorce record, the family legal system, and how custody battles can hurt kids. The Examiner looks at Castillo's history of mental illness. And the Washington Post says the drowner dad could face the death penalty, but prosecutors haven't decided yet if they'll go for it. This being the city, it's more than unlikely.
One man was fatally shot last night in the 2400 block of E. Hoffman St. in East Baltimore. There were two other shootings on the east side around the same time, one of which may have been related to the Hoffman St. shooting.
Another man was fatally shot this morning at a playground in the 800 block of N. Franklintown Rd. in West Baltimore.
A wounded man was found on the southbound shoulder of I-95 in HarCo early this morning. He died about an hour later. Homicide is investigating.
The man who was killed on Billie Holiday court on Sunday has been ID'd as 27-year-old Ronald Joyner.
A 20-year-old MICA student was raped by a man who offered to help her when she was locked out of her Bolton St. apartment. Police are looking for a 30-ish black man who is about 5'6", has a gap between his front teeth, and has a penchant for orange.
A 22-year-old was shot in the head in Edgewood. Police believe it was drug related.
A 6-year-old in Randallstown was packing a loaded Glock and a loaded 9mm in class yesterday.
An 80-year-old man kicked some ass in Pasadena.
Lewis Rich was found guilty for fatally stabbing Ernest Buchanan Jr. at a downtown McDonald's last year, and he got 10 years.
Seventeen people are suing the BPD for unconstitutional behavior.

Seventeen people are suing the BPD for unconstitutional behavior.
Seventeen plaintiffs in a federal civil rights lawsuit filed Friday claim they were the victims of a special plainclothes unit of the Baltimore Police Department that repeatedly made arrests without good cause, executed illegal searches and seizures of the detainees’ homes and filed charges that did not result in convictions.
The 60-page lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Baltimore, alleges members of an East Side Special Enforcement Team, the SET ‘B’ squad, carried out their mission to “respond to emerging violent crime problems” without regard to constitutional constraints and without objection from their superiors.
The suit also accuses the officers of filing false reports to justify unwarranted and fruitless searches.

Afternoon
From the State's Attorney's office:
In other local murder news, 16-year-old Farron Tates was indicted by the Baltimore City Grand Jury.
This afternoon Mark Anthony Castillo, 41 of Schuylkill Road in Rockville was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder, child abuse, and child abuse resulting in death. He was held without bail by a court commissioner. A judicial bail review is scheduled for Tuesday morning. The kids were all drowned. The Sun, the TV news (WMAR, WJZ, WBAL) and the AP all have additional details.
In other local murder news, 16-year-old Farron Tates was indicted by the Baltimore City Grand Jury.
Court documents allege Farron Tates was responsible for a shooting incident on March 1, 2008 in the 5000 block of Denmore Avenue. Anthony Underwood and Tates were engaged in an altercation when Tates produced a handgun and shot him in the head and chest. Underwood died at the scene.
An arraignment is scheduled for May 6, 2008 before Judge Lynn K. Stewart, Room 215, Mitchell Courthouse.
March 31
I wonder if Mark Castillo's three kids ever got him one of those "#1 Dad" t-shirts for Father's Day. (Also: Sun, WMAR)
Including the Castillo family, there were five murders over the weekend. At about 5:00 yesterday morning, a man was stabbed in the neck in the 1000 block of Billie Holiday Ct. Just after midnight, the soon-to-be-dead body of 19-year-old Javon King was found by a driver in the 5400 block of Nelson Ave. Neighbors heard gunshots earlier, but they were too busy doing stuff to actually call the cops in a reasonable time frame.
Looks like the same people who give out fictitious parking tickets might be going after the career of BPD Sgt. Michael Wingler.
On Friday, a man was chased and beaten on E. Federal St., a woman was robbed of $900 on E. Lombard St., and a photographer was robbed of $19,000 worth of equipment on Maryland Ave.

Today, I'm bored out of my skull we have a special haiku edition of Baltimore Crime
Pervy officer
touches the young spring blossom
bad touch, cousin cop
Levi Peterson
sold dirty pre-teen pictures
bastard copped a plea
Middle-aged man
flees cops, swallows drug baggie
Darwin strikes again
Ronald Calhoun charged
points gun at woman, Sun staff
The Alameda
Sweet flower of love
How much for that sweet booty
in Ellicott City?
Sixty-eight riots
still ripple forward today
our Baltimore "B"
