Drug Family Feud
No arrests yet in the N. Lakewood/2600 E. Ashland Avenue Sunday BBQ bulletstorm, which the Sun reports was rooted in the feud between the Blackwell and Rich family drug organizations.
The two teens shot and killed at 200 N. Conkling St, Gary Martin and Darien Jones, apparently had no connection to the BBQ shootings and no criminal histories, reports JZ, though they were also reportedly on the way home from a cookout.
However, the shootings at Baltimore & Bond (and Comet?) apparently all DO have some link to the feud that dates back at least as far as the Blackwell brothers' kidnapping and the shootout at Unity United church last summer, and the Baltimore Spectator speculates that the the woman shot at the Club at 4217 Erdman and the killing of Jerrod Reed were connected also.

a pregnant woman, a toddler and 10 others struck at a BBQ and two teenagers shot dead on Conkling St...
The Baltimore Spectator blogs that the BBQ was a memorial to 16-year-old murder victim Jerrod Reed, shot on the 16th, and that there may also be a connection to Saturday's murder of a woman at the Club House Lounge.
Sun UPDATE:
One of the victims at the cookout shooting was Steven Blackwell, 25, whose younger brothers were abducted last April in what police said was part of an escalating feud between rival drug organizations. Police sources at the time told The Baltimore Sun that the abductions may have set off a wave of as many as five retaliatory homicides over the course of three months last summer.Sunday's cookout was to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the fatal shootings of Quinton Hogan, 23, who police believe was connected with the Blackwells, and Donell Rogers, 21. They were fatally shot July 25, 2008, shortly after Hogan appeared in District Court.

The SAO reports that today Judge John C. Themelis sentenced Darius Hester, 21, of the 6400 block of Rosemont Avenue to 50 years in prison for the attempted second degree murder and robbery of a Zorba’s Restaurant deliveryman. Details:
On May 29, 2009 a city jury found Hester guilty of attempted second degree murder, reckless endangerment, robbery with a dangerous weapon, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit 1st degree assault, and related handgun charges.Corey Johnson, the 17-year-old accused of trying to rob an off-duty officer at a bus stop, will be charged as an adult
On July 20, 2007, at approximately 2:30 PM, police responded to the block of 3500 East Northern Parkway to investigate a shooting. Officers observed the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the groin area. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Police investigation revealed that the victim worked for Zorbas Restaurant and was delivering a food order to the 3500 block of East Northern Pkwy. As the victim approached the apartment building he was met by two males. One of the males stood in front of the other and acted as if he would pay for the food order. The male in the back took out a handgun and demanded the victim’s money. The victim and the unarmed man struggled. The unarmed man struck the victim in the face, knocking him backwards. The unarmed male then grabbed the food and fled. The gunman then fired his weapon striking the victim in the groin area, knocking him to the ground. The gunman then stood over the victim and fired several more rounds at the victim’s head before fleeing on foot.
Detectives developed a suspect and placed him in a photographic array. The victim identified Darius Hester in the photographic array as the person who shot and robbed him.
Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Wilson of the F.I.V.E. Division prosecuted this case.

"a high-tech gimmick"
Well, sounds like the taxpayers of Baltimore city have been boned again, this time by a Nebraska company that took advantage of impulse shoppers at the DJS. I think Cham's editorial sums it up nicely (edited with some links thrown in, you can see the full comment here):
"Ah, we are starting to piece together what happened with young Lamont Davis. He's been guilty of several crimes and has been active within the juvenile justice system for years. Once he received his GPS monitoring device from the fine state of Maryland he was inconvenienced by having to wear an ankle device attached to his leg, but other than that his life continued on unencumbered. He was a criminal punk beforehand and he simply continued to be a criminal punk after he got his device terrorizing his neighborhood. Nothing changed.
From the Sun article today one glaring sentence stands out. last line second page:
•Once the devices are separated by more than 150 feet, the transmitter becomes useless. Offenders don't even need to cut off the anklet to avoid being tracked ...
We can write the rest of this story. Little Raven has 2 bullets in her head, LaMont is getting 30 years, we, the taxpayers, are probably getting to pay for LaMonts long hotel stay and Raven's expensive Shock Trauma experience. iSECUREtrac Inc. will eventually make some lame excuse as to why they are sucking money out of our state and not providing any service, and nobody's head will roll over at the Department of Juvenile justice over this ...
Little Raven is black and poor. It's a shame that she wasn't white and middleclass, that way Nancy Grace would offer to crawl up Lamont's ass and monitor his position from there.

People in Roland Park live nineteen years longer than residents of the Southwest.

(Also interesting: RP residents live a year longer than the residents of Homeland, and 10 years longer than denizens of the Hampden/Remington area)
(Average US life expectancy = 78 years)
It's also sobering to compare the SW to other countries, like, say, Libya.

Guilty Plea for Murder of 3-Year-Old Jabari Stocks
From the SAO:
Phillip Queen, 29, of the 100 block of Conley Drive pled guilty today to second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. The State had called its first two witnesses yesterday and today when Judge Charles G. Bernstein accepted the guilty plea. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.
Queen pled guilty to the following statement of facts: On June 8, 2007 Queen caused the death of Jabari Stocks, 3, while babysitting him at he and his girlfriend’s house in the 900 block of Patapsco Avenue. The mother was working that night. Queen called the mother at work that night advising her that her that Jabari was not breathing and was unresponsive. Queen said that Jabari had choked. The mother left work and rushed home to take Jabari to Harbor Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was ruled homicide by trauma to the brain with force. Testimony would have shown that Queen took a disliking to Stokes, calling him spoiled and that eventually, June 8, 2007, he hit Jabari in a way in which his head was slammed into an object, severing neurons in his brain.
Judge Bernstein did not schedule a sentencing date pending a pre-sentence investigation of Queen’s history. Felony Family Violence Division Chief Julie Drake and Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly Burrell prosecuted this case.

Social services hasn't been filing court-ordered reports, but if the agency can manage to file three in a row, federal oversight of Baltimore's foster care system could end.
... still no answer to the question, why are there so many families who want kids and don't have them, and so many kids without families?
Dennis Testo's mullet is out on bail
75 years
for man who fired on two officers, hitting one in the femoral artery. Details from the SAO:
Atkins was convicted based on the following facts of the case. On April 15, 2008 Detectives Mark Spila and Robert Himes observed Charles Atkins walk from 2858 W. Lanvale Street to a 1999 Gold Lexus. Atkins was displaying characteristics of an armed person. As Atkins entered the front passenger seat of the Lexus which was being driven by Robert Campbell, detectives approached the Lexus and Campbell put the car in reverse and drove approximately 30-40 feet to Poplar Grove before the vehicle stalled in the street. Detective Spila approached the passenger side and Detective Himes approached the driver’s side. Atkins then exited the front passenger seat of the car and began fighting with Detective Spila and attempted to flee on foot. Atkins then turned and produced a gun and fired the gun at Detective Spila striking him and barely missing Spila’s femoral artery. As Atkins ran away, he also fired shots at Detective Himes. Both detectives returned fire. Atkins then fled into 2858 W. Lanvale Street. Backup units responded to the area. When Atkins exited the home he began to run at officers with an object in his hand. Atkins was ordered to stop but failed to do so. He was then shot and taken into custody. Both Atkins and Det. Spila were taken to Shock Trauma for treatment. Atkins handgun was recovered and found to be a .40 caliber Glock. DNA testing showed Atkins’ DNA was on the grip of the handgun.

Baltimore PoliceDept SHOOTING: reported @ 1800 Chapel St, adult male shot. Fatal injuries
incidents
Last Thursday's stabbing may have been gang-related
An officer from the Western was arrested and suspended after a "domestic incident" sent his wife to the hospital
What the?! "The Baltimore mayor's chief of staff and two other government officials sued an Ocean City Domino's pizza and related businesses for $30 million after employees at the beachfront pizzeria refused to serve them and allegedly imprisoned them in the restaurant"
"A long-running lawsuit involving a shady life insurance settlement company, a bevy of questionable insurance policies and a murdered porn shop owner has finally settled."
The BPD says FHB III's "minor medical issue" was dehydration, not exploding roids or anything horribly embarrassing like that

Police tweet that the commissioner "experienced a minor medical issue during the Baltimore 10-miler. He is responsive. & coherent, being evaluated"
Must be something really embarrassing if they won't say what it is!
Adds another tweet, "Commissioner Bealefeld will remain in hosp for standard 24 hour observation. He is responsive & coherent & talking w/ family & staff"
Feel better Big B!

Also, from the SAO:
At a hearing today, Lawrence Gee, 35, of the unit block of S. Monastery Road pled guilty to second-degree murder. Judge John C. Themelis sentenced Gee to life suspend all but 30 years in prison.
On August 19, 2006, police responded to 227 N. Culver Street, the home of Mary Page, 63, the victim in this case. Page’s employer, The Walter Art Gallery {sic}, called because Ms. Page did not show up for work on August 18 or 19, very unusual for her. Police found the house locked residence and forced entry into the home. Once inside police found Ms. Page’s body in the basement. There were obvious signs of violence, her pants and underpants had been removed, and Ms. Page’s face was bruised. An autopsy concluded that the cause of death was a homicide and that the manner of death resulted from strangulation, sharp force injuries to the neck consistent with being stabbed with a sharp object and blunt force injuries consistent with being beaten about the face and head.
Witnesses informed police that Gee dated the victim’s daughter and used to live in Ms. Page’s residence prior to her evicting both of them for theft and drug use. On August 26, 2006 police located Gee and pursuant to a search warrant DNA swabs were taken for comparison with evidence recovered from the victim’s body. On February 13, 2007 DNA analysis was completed on swabs from the victim and samples submitted by Gee and results indicated a match.
Housing squabbles
Unruly tennants, too many kids on the streets, broken windows and lots of police calls have lead to tensions between renters and owners at the city's Albermarle Square, a mixed-income development that replaced the notoriously drug ridden Flag House Courts housing projects.
Thursday morning torture
Johnnie Butler and Calvin Wright have been charged with the 2007 torture and murder of Sintia Mesa. Both were already in jail on unrelated drug charges.
