May 23

A triple shooting outside of a Citgo station in the Southwest killed a teenage victim; also more details on the 11 shootings of the past two days, including the Mt. Royal sextuple.

The governor wants to change arrest procedures in the city, cutting out the step of having prosecutors review cases. Said he, "Prosecutorial discretion not to pursue a case is often confused with an alleged absence of probable cause, which is then spun as a supposed false arrest."

Judge John Prevas sentenced Charles Patterson, 27, of the 600 block of N. Woodington Road to 15 years in prison today for multiple counts of robbery. On March 21, 2007, a Baltimore City jury convicted Patterson and Antwan Smith, 23, of the 6800 block of Lenbern Road of three counts of Robbery with a Dangerous or Deadly Weapon and one count of Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous or Deadly Weapon. They were also acquitted of the murder of Anthony Heck, probably because Heck was found with a loaded gun in his hand. On May 3 Smith was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in these crimes. The story:
On October 23, 2005, the defendants robbed or attempted to rob Lamar Davis, James Anderson, Charlotte Johnson, and Tycara Johnson in the area of 4100 block of Cleve Court of the Brooklyn Homes in South Baltimore, Maryland. During this robbery spree, Anthony Heck came upon the defendants and shot at them from a distance. Antwan Smith allegedly returned fire, hitting and causing the death of Heck.
Judge Robert Kershaw sentenced Edwin Wright, 25, to 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole following a conviction for cocaine possession and possession with intent to distribute. Details:
On May 6, 2006, at approximately 8:40 PM, a police officer was in a covert location, using binoculars, with a clear and unobstructed view of the 1100 block of Preston Street. At that time the officer observed an unknown male approach Wright, speaking briefly with him. The conversation ended with the unknown male handing Wright U.S. currency in bill form. Wright then reached down into his right front sock and pulled out a vial containing a white substance suspected cocaine, and handed it to the male who then left the area. Search incident to arrest of Wright revealed five vials of cocaine in his right sock. At the time of this incident Wright was on probation for two other felony drug cases. Additionally, Wright is pending a second degree assault case from an October 6, 2006 incident in which he allegedly punched a police officer several times in the face during a traffic stop. Wright has an extensive violence arrest record and therefore the State asked for this enhanced penalty.
510757225_7295cb61c0_mWTF? WBAL reports "two dead, 11 injured in mulitple shootings, stabbings," including:

  • a man who died after being shot in the head on East 21st Street;

  • a six-year-old boy caught in crossfire and shot in the ankle on West Mosher Street and Pennsylvania Avenue close to Bolton Hill;

  • The woman was shot in the stomach on Roland View Avenue;

  • Four shooting victims were found along Mount Royal Avenue in two separate areas and two more victims at the Mount Royal and St. Paul Street gas station

  • A man shot in the wrist and arm in the 300 block of Eutaw Street around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday;

  • and
  • three people were stabbed in the 600 block of Water Street around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

A double-shooting in the 2300 block of East Fayette outside the Morning Edition Cafe, "At Least 1 Dead."

HoCo police have arrested Charles David Richardson, 23, for two shootings in Columbia this month.

AAC: Two men were shotgunned while walking along Elvaton Road in Glen Burnie.

Can the Rev. Jamal-Harrison Bryant revive the apathetic masses?

Towson OB David C. McCarus agreed to repay $300k to the government to settle his billing-fraud case.

Perverterium:
The DOJ called the case against Patrick Bogan of Edgewood "one of the most significant child pornography cases ever prosecuted in Maryland due to the sheer volume of child pornography possessed by the defendant." The gymnastics instructor had 800 videotapes, a hard-drive with alphabetized and categorized folders, 21 pairs of girls' underpants, a storage locker... anyway, Bogan has pled guilty.

Jury selection began today in HoCo for the trial of Baltimore County pastor Gerald Fitroy Griffith, accused of engaging in sexual acts with a teenage parishioner (gender unknown) in Columbia hotels in 2004 and 2005.

Loitering around a snowball stand has cost "the Roland Park perv" Kenneth Barnes his freedom. Well fer Pete's sake, is not the pursuit of happiness a fundamental right promised by our nation's own Declaration of Independence?

local news does it again! getting a single number in an address wrong and throwing off the location of a crime scene by ten blocks!

they mean 2300, not 3300.

Among tonight's shootings:

3800 block, Rolandview Ave in lower Park Heights

300 block, East 21st Street in Barclay

1500 block, Pennsylvania Ave (a kid was hit)

Maurice Bradbury said...

thanks for that galt.. WBAL said "Roland Avenue" for the first, a bit different, no?

John Galt said...

Boy, wouldn't councilperson MPC call for action if there were a shooting on Roland. You know, where the important people live.

But so long as it's just us darkies, I imagine the Council'll forego the emergency designation, continue to shrink the police force through attrition, and have them working mostly down by the Convention Hotel, protecting out-of-state important people.

ppatin said...

WBAL claims that there were 11 shootings and stabbings in the past day, 2 of them fatal.

ppatin said...

WJZ is saying that eleven people were hurt and two were killed yesterday. It must have been a busy night at Shock Trauma.

Let's not forget the FOUR shootings on Mt. Royal - 2 at Mt. Royal and St. Paul amd 2 at Mt. Royal and Guilford.

Triple or Quadruple shooting in Mt. Vernon at approx. 11:20 pm on Tuesday night. At least one dead at the scene. Corner of Guilford and Mt. Royal. It sounded like 30 to 50 rounds in less than 15 seconds. 20+ police responded. Detectives combed the scene for evidence for hours.

As of 9 am this morning, no reporting in the local press, which is odd, as the scene is on the A side of a Baltimore A/B border. Baltimore A-? Baltimore B+?

sean beat me to the punch. Multiple shootings are loud!

In possibly related news, I don’t know, but there was a crew of five or six selling on North Calvert, at the corner of Calvert and Preston during rush hour on Monday night. They had hoppers delivering around the back and everything. I’ve never seen stuff like this in Mt. Vernon.

i live near there. can't find anything on it. wtf?

burgersub said...

how can you not find anything on it? most of the local television station's websites have something on it, including the thing linked in the comment immediately preceding yours. they all say that one of the guys is still in critical condition with nobody dead though.

Anonymous said...

So the guy wasn’t dead? Cop lied to me. That’s good, I guess, if a critical gunshot wound to the head could be considered a good thing. I’m still shocked at how this is apparently not considered newsworthy by the local press, other than a blotter blurb on the wjz website.* Maybe I’m only thinking that way because it scared the living shit out of me... and my cat. Poor little pussy wouldn’t come out from under the bed for hours.

The shootings on both corners were definitely an extended single volley. There was no pause between the two.

*burgersub, I don't know. I guess I'm not much of internet crime tracker, although I did just follow john galt's link and read that blurb. I couldn't find anything on the sun, examiner or the wbal websites. I really don't know of any other sources, other than this.

All I know is that I would brave the gunplay to eat at Morning Edition. The service sucks but the food is fantastic.

it probably happened too late last night to make it into normal newspapers by this morning. they briefly mention it on wbal and wbff as well as wjz.

As of 11:52 the Sun is still not reporting the incident(s). One block south of Penn Station is lit up like Fallujah, four get shot, two within sight of the front door of the station, and the Sun deems this as not newsworthy. Unbelievable.

A funny quote from today's Mitchell story:

"Mayor Dixon is busy running the city of Baltimore," said Anthony McCarthy, a spokesman for Dixon. Dixon is in Las Vegas attending a convention of the International Council of Shopping Centers, a New York-based trade association for the retail industry.

Does she have any relatives in the real estate biz?

There's nothing on the University of Baltimore's public safety page about the Mt. Royal shooting, either.

It only took them a day to post the robbery of two law students on the page from the 17th.

so are you guys angry at the sun for not talking about this, thereby proving that a double standard exists for reportage on crime in "good" areas vs that in "bad" ones, or are you pointing out that, because the sun didn't print anything about this, such a double standard does not actually exist?

Anonymous said...

we all know that there is a double standard for reporting. I'm not sure that anybody, even in the media, would contest that. After all, one murder in howard county is headline news today. My point is, have things fallen so deeply within the city that a quadruple shooting a block in front of Penn Station doesn't even warrent a blurb in the newpaper of record? IT WAS A QUADRUPLE SHOOTING! it constituted, in itself, 37% of yesterday's shootings.

I've lived in this neighborhood for 7 years. There has not been, to my knowledge, a shooting for years. these two "seperate" incidences, that happened supposedly 30 seconds apart within a distance that I could throw a frisby, are not seperate. I heard the shots. All of them. It was one incident. I don't know if the police are trying to seperate them to downplay it, or if it is the media, but for some reason it is being downplayed.

hey i found a flickr account where the first picture is a shot from the copycat of guilford & mt. royal taken today, plus some close ups of blood stained pavement, and the description is:

This is the view from my loft. In the last three days, I've literally watched three people take their last breaths outside my window. I was writing an artist statement at my window on Sunday and heard the beginning of a crash on Dead Man's Curve and looked out the window just in time to see a man fly off his motorcycle and get cut in half by that light post. As you can see (#1), they didn't bother to even pick up the sheet where he died. Kiley and I woke up last night to about 15 gun shots that killed two men (#2 and #3). We watched the two murderers run down the street towards our window. They ditched the gun in the back of a pickup truck literally parked just below our window. At the moment of the shooting, there were two cop cars parked on the highway down there investigating that motorcycle accident scene. So two people were shot about 200 feet away from two cops. The cops had no idea. There were 8 murders in Baltimore yesterday -- not including these two because these officially happened after midnight. They didn't even bother to clean up after their deaths. I guess there's no time for that. They're sadly too overworked.
The weird thing about all of this is that Kiley, Noah, and I were out to dinner on Saturday night and a conversation came up about how none of us has ever seen someone die out on the street. I've watched probably a hundred people die in my life, but never one out on the street. It's much different. So sad.

where is this guy getting his information? could it be true? EIGHT murders last night?

Anonymous said...

it sounds like he misread the articles about the 11 citywide shootings. also, there were no fatalities at the scene, but at the time there was confusion. the cop cordening the street in front of my building told us one was dead. Odd though, both of our spots look down at the same scene from different angles. I too saw the cops on the JFX. I didn't see the guys running away, but the detectives were combing over the bridge for evidence for hours.

also, I heard a lot more shots than 15. echo, maybe?

do you have the flickr link?

John Galt said...

I think it's like eight shooting incidents. Not all fatal. Yet.

Aaaand, as the City bleeds, Mayor Dixon is catching Wayne Newton at the Sahara in Vegas.

Unfortunately, what goes on in Baltimore stays in Baltimore. And keeps right on going. On. And on.

Business as usual in Murdaland, USA.

Wouldn't it be cool if some elected official (above and beyond Bobby Curran) expressed some.... dissatisfaction with the status quo ???

Dream on.

How the f*** is this not on the front page of The Sun and WJZ???!!! For god's sake impeach Hamm and Dixon, have the State Police run the show for god's sake!

Anonymous said...

jamietab, anybody else, please correct me if i’m wrong, but if I scanned the Sun thoroughly enough, I’m fairly certain that *none* of yesterday’s 11 shootings made the Sun. I don't think they bothered to mention that11 shootings occured. It seems to me that the Sun has a daily local news quota. Once that quota of maybe 5 or 6 local crime articles are met, than nothing else is included. After reporting on a murder in the suburbs, an SUV driving into a starbucks, and 3 or 4 articles showing a community coming together over that big fire north of Green Mount Cemetery, there was no more room for local copy.

It is about time that someone, out of mercy, do to that paper what was done to Barbaro. It is the only humane thing to do.

"Baltimore is employing a somewhat similar strategy, called Operation Protect, in which the city barricades individual neighborhoods and floods them with police and city services. Two neighborhoods, one in Park Heights and the other near McElderry Park, are taking part in the program now, and Dixon has vowed to establish two more." McElderry Park has officially surrender to the BLOODS, the COPS have to get some overtime $$$ money from someone!!!!300 murders here we come...

The State Police are afraid to come into Bmore. The last time they were asked in the 90s for some traffic enforcement quite a few threatened to quit along with some union fussing. Plus the guys aren't trained for urban policing, not that they can't learn.

As for the po-po saying someone died, yeah, a gunshot to the head is generally a death knell, even if the hospital keeps the person on life support...he's most likely brain dead.

WTH is going on in Mt Vernon???!!??

Maurice Bradbury said...

Oh Lordy, what timing! making dinner, have a headache:
*ring!* *ring!*
"Hello! I'm calling on behalf of Mayor Sheila Dixon, can she count on you for your support in the upcoming election?"

Har! Har!

ps. isn't it kind of early for those calls?
pps. In spite of the bloodbathing going on, Fox led the "news"cast with American Idol ... then BGE rate hikes and the fire, THEN the triple-shooting story... then more American Idol! ("Do viewers agree with America's decision?")
not a single mention of the other shootings, the stabbings, and, oh yeah, the war.

I wonder if Jeff n' Jennifer ever get sick of all that dreck on the 'prompter. I think they keep them in little veal pens backstage so they have no idea anything else that goes on unless it's on their channel.

Maurice Bradbury said...

Wow, the Sun had the SW story up 1 1/2 hours after it happened (as opposed to the usual 1 1/2 days)... that's incredible!
Go, Dick, go!

Maurice Bradbury said...

The state police aren't afraid, but (explained Ed Norris once) the troopers didn't want to take orders from the BPD, and O'Malley wouldn't have it any other way.

State troopers appearing would also make it look like the city couldn't handle its own business, not the image someone running for office wants to cultivate during an election year. Which is why Dixon bringing in troopers is about as likely as ___ <-- insert simile

jaimetab said...

Well, yeah, the city CAN'T handle it's own business, is that a surprise to anyone??? So, instead of admitting there's a huge problem, they'll have us getting killed everyday instead? If this alone isn't grounds for removal and overhaul of the city gov't, I don't know what is.
