July 13

Two murders on the East side last night: a man was stabbed to death near the Perkins Homes, a man was shot in the 400 block of North Bouldin Street at about 7:30 p.m. Also on the East side, Clayborn Johnson, 59, died Tuesday after being beaten on Sunday in the 2000 block of North Bentalou Street. And in the Western, a man on his stoop was shot in the arm.

Wanted:
kevin armisteadCity police are seeking Black "Gorilla"* Kevin Armsteadguerilla vs. gorilla, 24, of the 700 block of E. 43rd St., in the fatal shooting of Ricardo Paige, 54, whose body was found in a vacant house in Pen Lucy. (Thanks for the picture Durham)
*Er, shouldn't that be "black guerrilla family" ?

A robber is following elderly people home from the bank.

Like a beached fish with ADD, "Just a week after she indicated that police retention is a more pressing problem than recruitment, Mayor Sheila Dixon yesterday announced a series of steps to enhance police recruitment while mentioning no concrete plans for improving retention rates," which the spokescop of the police union says depend on "working conditions, leadership, equipment and, at the very end, wages."
Meanwhile, Mitchell's campaigning on a 15% across-the-board pay raise for the police.

A boy was shot in the leg near Milford Mill Academy, an 18-year-old woman hit a 25-year-old with a plank in the SE, and plenty of robbing and burgling in the Blotter.

Yesterday Judge John C. Themelis sentenced Leshawn Calvin Greene, 24, of the 2500 block of North Edgecomb Court to Life plus 95 consecutive years in prison for the murder and attempted murders of four juveniles in a shoot-out in a pizza shop on July, 16, 2005 in the 1300 block of Poplar Grove. Details:
A city jury convicted Greene on May 10, 2007 of entering the pizza shop and shooting at the victims as they were waiting for their food order. Mr. Javon Lee, 16, died from his injuries; the other three victims suffered non-life threatening injuries: Renard Hunt, 16, of 3100 Westmont Court, James King, 17, of 1400 Poplar Grove and Marvin Williams, 17, of 1200 Ashburton Street.

During the course of the trial, an identifying witness, Pharoah Carr, and a close friend of Greene, left Maryland to avoid testifying at trial. Prosecutor Diana Smith successfully used a provision in the new witness intimidation passed by the legislature in 2005 that allowed her to offer Carr’s photo identification and taped statement despite Carr’s absence. After the Court granted the State’s motion to allow the photo array and taped statements into evidence, Carr appeared for trial.
In a most unusual move (for a non-election year), the SA's office and the Mayor's office issued a joint press release on the Greene conviction.

First "Little" Al Gore, now the son of the civil rights director for the Maryland attorney general's office, Kojo Snowden, is having drug problems: he and 11 others were charged with selling the doobage. Little S and friends face a broad gamut of potential penalties: something between a year in jail and $1,000, to five years and a $15,000 fine.

You Might be a Redneck If ... you're a 41-year-old former KKK leader on trial for sexually assaulting your 15-year-old sister.

We'll soon be bidding a sad adieu to the Magnet Bar, best known as the quintessential dive near North Avenue where local service workers can grab an after-work quaff at 4 a.m. But the shell of the Chesapeake on Charles and E. Lanvale, an eyesore for 30+ years, gets to stay an eyesore.

I don't suppose there's any chance that the legislature will do anything to curb the use of eminent domain.

I'm a bit confused.

When Mayor Dixon refers to Mitchell's proposed 15% salary increase as 'unrealistic', what does she mean?

That it's not enough money to get high quality police to be willing to work in this crummy hole of a city ?

Or that she never really had any intention of paying people to perform the vital function of policing Baltimore's huge criminal population ?

I don't understand how the fundamental reason for having any government can be a low priority.

Meanwhile, Kevin Armstead, a fixture in this neighborhood (not in a good way), is wandering around with his handguns.

Here's WBAL radio's report on the current state of affairs.

Oh, and don't be mislead by Dixon's weasel words. When she says she wants to increase the recruitment goal by 90 officers, that means the stated target, not the result, which has consistently fallen way short of Authorized Manpower every year under stellar performer Lenny Hamm.

Mitchell's proposal is to fully staff current Authorized Manpower of 3,200 and hire another 250 on top of that. As in, actually hired.

Gotta wonder with an undermanned Warrant Squad how far back in the list of 41,000 open warrants Mr. Armstea is and how long it will take to get to him ?

I noticed a new murder "169 Ashley Bellosi" discovered July 7 on 800 St Paul St posted on the new murder map on the Sun's website; but can't find a story anywhere about what happened?

John Galt said...

Holding up reports of incidents in the 'important' parts of town is all part of juking the stats.

Anonymous said...

Not surprising we have a "gorilla" gang. Judging from the number of "grizzly" murders reported, we also have a problem with violent bears. It's a jungle out there.

It took the Sun almost two weeks to report the murder of Antonio Tracy, I agree with John Galt here. There are also reports of an arrest of a 15 year old in the Lackl murder out in the county. BC Police press confrence to be held later today.

Johnathan Ryan Cornish 15, and an unidentified 21 year old man have been arrested according to the Sun.

Nothing on the murder of Ashley Bellosi anywhere but on the "inferior" Sun homicide map. How can a 23 year old, white female murdered in the heart of Mt. Vernon not garner one scrap of news??????

John Galt said...

And who caught this:

Dixon wants to fund Civil Service Exam prep courses because only half the takers pass the test, which the Police Union refers to as 'not rocket science', so that we can attract an even lower grade of employee into a position which is easily abused here. This instead of paying what good, ethical, competent officers will necessarily cost.

What a frickin' hack !

No wonder Baltimore City sucks so hard.

John Galt said...

Flash: double-stabbing just happened on the 1800 block, St. Paul Street in Charles North.

John Galt said...

And lots of theft in North Baltimore.

John Galt said...

FYI, Ashley Bellosi died of complications from an assault suffered earlier in the month.

If they mapped all the assaults in this town, the screen would be covered by the first quarter.

That's sad.

Ashley Bellosi was beaten to the point of death. Although she died days later, it should still be covered by the media, so that the man who did it can be caught! I dont understand the whole 'earlier in the month'. She was beaten on the 7th and died on the 11th. HELLO! Its not old news, I just happend within a week.

Some of you people just need to move out of Baltimore.

I've been watching these comments for a while and I see that this "Galt" guy has lived in the city FOR YEARS and seems to do little else other than simmer and serve up withering hatred of the city and its leadership.

Christ man, if you hate a place so much, leave it. This is a free country. Oh wait... perhaps Galt is serving time and can't leave?

Maurice Bradbury said...

What are you talking about? This is the greatest city in America!

You can sarcastically make fun with smarmy catch-phrases about Baltimore all you want, cybrarian, but at the end of the day _you_ live here.

I just happen to think that people who live in a place that they can say nothing nice about are fools and are cheating themselves out of a simple pleasure in life-- living in a place one likes.

On the other hand, some folks just aren't happy unless they are putting something down.

John Galt said...

Anon, these are not complicated problems in municipal policy. A five year-old could run this city better. Why should citizens have to flee just because local demagogues deprive them of basic righs ? And why should the broader society legitimize their behavior by relieving their refugees ?

The leadership here has neither the intellectual nor the ethical maturity which accompanies the passage through kindergarten.

The misery here is absolutely unnecessary, and serves only the interests of the bureaucrats. Question: if you live in a war zone, can the political leadership be tried for warcrimes ?

John Galt said...

Hypothesis: merge Baltimore City with the surrounding counties and then see how long any of them will tolerate this bullsh!t.

So, if it's intolerable to the vast majority of the state, why should local politicians be permitted to subject their citizens to this nonsense. While some would call it local self-determination, I'd call it local oppression using an army of thugs as agents of change.

Kinda like when the Shiite-majority government turns a blind eye to the slaughter of minorities by Shiite militia.

You seem to be suggesting that unsatisfied minorities should flee, which legitimizes cleansing along ethnic, racial, religious, or socioeconomic/behavioral lines.

"You seem to be suggesting that unsatisfied minorities should flee, which legitimizes cleansing along ethnic, racial, religious, or socioeconomic/behavioral lines."

Oh boy, one of those. Of course, anon never even mentioned minorities, but John (who I often agree with on other threads) has to slime that in there as if he did inorder to justify the "legitimizes cleansing..." outrage.
So anon, did you know that simply commenting here with a pretty common sense remark would out you as a PRO RACIAL CLEANSING MONSTER?

My God, man. How do you live with yourself?!?

John Galt said...

It's not common sense, Mike.

It's a myopically rational solution which reinforces a defective policy.

When my grandfather was a kid and the Cossacks were looting his home, the local government people asked "But why then do you stay?" The reason was because the family had left antisemitic France and were told they were welcome in town, provided they kept to their own, which they did.

When they came here, he was barred from many places because of his ethnicity in pre-war America, which was flirting with antisemitism.

When Israel came to be, many jews thought "At last, a place where we can be the majority and treat everyone else like crap." He didn't concur and chose to stay.

I believe in pluralism. I don't wish to live in an enclave of people just like me. But that requires something like the Golden Rule.

If government can abandon residents of this city to its wolves, then it ought to do so to all the nice people in the suburbs. Just decriminalize Part I offenses across Maryland.

But if everyone's being subject to unspeakable exposure to crime is unacceptable policy, then so is mine, right ?

If the State of Maryland is going to legislate the basic criminal code, then it must bear the responsibility of ensuring that the local jurisdictions equalize outcomes thereunder. It's about equal protection under law.

Affording the City the discretion to endanger its citizens under the guise of local autonomy is just a bad and unsustainable policy. And simply wrong.

John, you're a sharp guy but don't insult me or others by trying to pretend that morphing a normal (to paraphrase) "If you don't like it then move" comment into "legitimiz[ing] cleansing along ethnic, racial, religious, or socioeconomic/behavioral lines" can be justified.
That is just rank postmodern hatemongering geekness: inflating an absolutely normal view into something only a snarling monster would have said. And frankly, it was so over the top that I felt sorry for you. That you think your response to him was on target is just pathetic.
Somehow your experience has led you to believe that you can dominate others by accusing them of racism on the most laughable pretext. But that only works with the weakminded. Perhaps you should widen your circle of friends.
And I'll remind you again: anon never mentioned minorities, but you attacked his view as if he did. That is dishonest and hateful.

John Galt said...

Excuse me? Racism?

Read again. The post is about the segregation of societies into enclaves of similarity. This is about hoodlum behavior, the assent to which is never legitimate, regardless of what kind of a political majority can be arranged behind it.

The statement was 'if you don't like it, leave it.' and my response was that no one should ever have to leave because their persons and property are violated. That is a basic failure of government in its most basic function.

Anonymous said...

You're a moral coward. You won't even take ownership of your own hateful accusation of racism. And against an anonymous commenter to boot. Jeez Loweeze.

"Excuse me? Racism?...my response was that no one should ever have to leave because their persons and property are violated. That is a basic failure of government in its most basic function."

Bullcrap. You said that he had directed his comment at minorities ("You seem to be suggesting that unsatisfied minorities should flee"), which is a false accusation. If there was any doubt as to what you were accusing him of, you left no doubt with "...which legitimizes cleansing along ethnic, racial, religious, or socioeconomic/behavioral lines."

Maybe one of those rightwing Rovian squads hacked the website and changed your comment, you know, just to make you look bad.

Ya know, you could have just said, "yeah you're right, he never said anything about minorities. Maybe I (cough) read it wrong." But no, you can't be wrong. Now I'm even more firmly convinced that you are just one of those jerks who goes around accusing everyone of racism, "ethnic cleansing", whatever. Anything to make others defensive and apologetic for whatever perverse pleasure people like you get from doing it.

My point is that if one recognizes the problems of Baltimore as stated on this blog-- AND STILL CHOOSES TO LIVE HERE, then, one MUST really love this city in some deep way.

Lurking on here reading the comments, I've never heard galt say a damn thing that was positive about Baltimore or his neighborhood. His only solution is to call for absurd actions that will NEVER happen. I'm going to suggest that even galt doesn't really believe that there is a solution to this mess anytime soon.

In other words, it is clear to me that galt _hates_ Baltimore. I am suggesting that if he really does he is a fool not to leave.

I'll even counter his political and social histrionics: one of the reasons why America is great is that people are able to move around and be free. No one forces you to stay in a place that oppresses you. Go buy yourself a nice house in one of the counties, Galt, use that bile for a constructive purpose. You too cybrarian-- although your bile seems to have a more sarcastic and satirical inclination it still betrays a pretty grim and unhappy view of your hometown. Perhaps you should move to a smaller city and create a blog where you keep track of stolen library books or something like that.

Myself, I love Baltimore city. I like it here and stay BY CHOICE. I recognize that Baltimore has serious problems and I do complain about it but I think that Baltimore can get past these problems, otherwise there would be no reason to stay here.

Mike, I was referring to the noncriminal minority in Baltimore B. Now, if you don't like my reference to episodes of forced segregation (cleansing) along religious, ethnic, or racial lines, I suppose you don't recognize it along behavioral or class lines either.

Anon, you're trying hard to see the glass half full. That may be much easier in your neighborhood. You don't live in the 'Hood, do you?

My neighborhood contains around 10% of the known criminals and maybe 2% of the policing. I'm pissed. I sorta suspect that people who live in relatively overpoliced parts of town would see the glass more half-empty if their excess police resources were reassigned to my area.

The formal literature on notions of fairness includes a vehicle known as the 'veil of ignorance', which provides that you must select a policy regime before knowing whether you will stand in my shoes or your own.

Those who are most optimistic about Baltimore tend to be those who already know they will never have to substantively deal with the majority of it.

Nice try, John. Too bad for you that anon wasn't and you got caught. False accusers are the bottom of the barrel, John. Interesting that you feel most comfortable there.
