A local blog recounts a robbery of two clubgoers near Pratt and S. Exeter.

At a hearing today Judge David Ross sentenced Anthony Whitley, 29, of Edgewood, MD to 15 years in prison, first five years without the possibility of parole, for two counts each of robbery deadly weapon, first and second degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence and conspiracy to commit robbery deadly weapon. The details:
On December 14, 2005 at approximately 7:45 p.m. two men armed with handguns entered the management office of the Lockwood Garage, 124 Market Place. They duct-taped the manager’s hands to his head and held a woman, nine months pregnant, at gunpoint. They proceeded to remove more than $24,000 from a safe. A coat with one of the guns used in the robbery was found in a stairwell at the garage after the robbery and DNA tests from the coat matched Whitley. Additionally, a duffle bag with a coin box and deposit bags taken from the robbery were located in front of a motel located a mile from Whitley’s house in Harford County. Whitley’s fingerprints were found on that coin box. A co-defendant in this case, Darryl Williams, is scheduled for trial October 29, 2007. Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Martin of the General Trial Division prosecuted this case.

Despite a trial and verdict, there is no sleeping well in Waverly.

Five years? Unbelievable. That kind of a crime deserves decades of prison time, or something even more drastic...

This is why they keep recidivating.

Incidentally, I've spoken with Bailey's mother, whose Section 8 lease in Waverly is being yanked because of the police raids.

She's now scouting for another in a neighborhood near you. Congrats. (Your tax dollars at work.)

Oh, by the way, she advocates the stop snitchin' culture. She's also (from the window of that house) one of the more likely witnesses to who actually firebombed the wrong house, so there likely will be no followup prosecution for the more serious subsequent offense.

Hence, no sleeping well in hoodlum-dominated Waverly.

So how does a sentence of 15 years with 5 being without the possibility of parole work? At 5 years are you eligible for Parole, or is the eligible for parole clock on hold until the 5 years is over?

BTW this is longer than some people in BC serve for 2nd degree murder.

I suspect that it means he will be out of prison in five years unless he does something truly idiotic like shank a guard. Maryland's sentencing rules are pretty weird and complicated, they had something about that topic on WYPR yesterday morning.

There were two killings on Monday, which brings our total up to 223 according to the Sun. Looks like we're on track to hit 312 by the end of the year, assuming there's no end of the year killing spree.

you guys think 5 years is a light sentence for "malicious destruction of property, trespassing and harassment?" it sounds rather harsh to me. the problem isn't the sentence, it's the charges. i think this dude got inappropriately light charges, considering that "police and prosecutors viewed both incidents as clear examples of intimidating a witness."
