January 15

"The 9-year-old boy went outside without his godmother's permission. His punishment was to sit in a bathtub as the woman filled it with five pots of boiling water. When he emerged from the scalding water, the lower half of his body was covered in severe burns. The woman waited four days to take him to a hospital."
Judge Glynn gave her six months... and the Department of Social Services allowed her to keep her biological child.

A boy who was 14-ish was sot to death in the 800 block of Bethune Rd. in Cherry Hill last night at about 6:30. (Isn't it amazing that two of our first six murders happened on the same street? I took a ride down Bethune Rd. last week, and I've never seen so many people in one neighborhood wearing so many red clothes. They must all have the same tailor or something.)

The article above confirms that 18-year-old Zecariah Hallback died on Saturday after being shot at a safe and reliable bus stop at the corner of 33rd and The Alameda on Thursday night. I assume that Hallback was waiting for the infuriatingly inconsistent MTA #22, which would have dropped him off a few blocks from his home in the 3200 block of Noble St.

And the same article also IDs 18-year-old Willie Joyner as the guy who was fatally stabbed by an old man in a store in the 400 block of E. 25th St. on Saturday afternoon.

Someone got shot in the crotch on Eutaw, and a cop got bopped on the noggin on Pennsylvania Ave.

Threats against the HarCo Circuit Courthouse were made on Friday, so there's more security in Bel Air during Sean Nelson Smith's trial.

Stupid bitch.

PDJ: Registered sex offender Leon Frederick Richards was charged with stalking an 11-year-old girl in Bel Air.

Beware of teenagers in puffy coats.

Three Lanham teenagers are being held without bond for last week's PG drive-by that killed one teenage girl and injured another teenage girl and a 36-year-old man. Apparently, the girl who died wasn't the intended target.

We must've just gotten some fancy new DNA equipment or something, because two guys were just arrested in two unrelated cases involving two dead hookers from three years ago. If my math is right, we'd have one more living hooker in this town if one of the guys hadn't gotten a suspended sentence on an old assault charge.

Patrick Byers (the accused murderer who allegedly paid someone $1,000 to kill witness Carl Lackl) goes to trial today for the death of Larry Haynes, and Bernardo Leconte and Cordero Taylor are being charged as adults for stabbing a 17-year-old at the Mall in Columbia.

It's a rough time to be an allegedly incompetent social services worker in either Baltimore or DC.

The trial continues for Brandon T. Morris, who is charged with killing prison guard Jeffery Wroten.

I moved up the child abuse story-- in an often-shocking city, that is one of the most outrageous, horrible things I have heard probably ever.

Glynn: "The real point of a sentence like this is to deal with the defendant into the future."
What?!
Next time she scalds a child and causes permanent damage, she'll face some REAL consequences!
What was he thinking?!?!

So the Blotter reported that Hallback was in critical condition three days after he was dead. Check facts much?

Cybes:

Since Hallback was shot in the head it could be that he was brain-dead, but being "alive" on life support so that his organs could be donated. This is just speculation on my part though.

Shamia Lawson is a good example of why I think some people should be forcibly sterilized. I know it's harsh, but if you can't figure out that boiling children is unacceptable then you are not and never will be fit to reproduce.

And here is the kicker quote from the Shamia Lawson story:

"Please have mercy on me," she asked the judge. "I need to be in my daughter's life."

No, you need to be kept as far away from your daughter (and all other children!) as possible.

Barf.
And here's a quote from Destiny D'Urso's lawyer: "This is a woman who has been through a lot. This, itself, has been incredibly difficult for her."

BOO HOO!!

"At least one other person seemed convinced of Lawson's parenting abilities: A Baltimore Department of Social Services worker testified on her behalf. The woman, a parenting class teacher, said Lawson had completed seven parenting classes since enrolling on her own Nov. 13. She has five to go."

Apparently she hadn't yet taken the "How Not to Scald Children" class.

Update on the Cherry Hill murder.

"A boy who was shot and killed last night on a street in Cherry Hill was identified this afternoon as 14-year-old Edward Smith, a city police spokesman said.

The spokesman, Troy Harris, said the youth's last known address was in the 1400 block of Seamon Ave., also in Cherry Hill."

So much for that drop in crime in Cherry Hill - from four murders last year to two in two weeks. The commish on the Cherry Hill Miracle:

Cherry Hill, Bealefeld says, will likely be used as a model for how to best combat crime in public housing developments, areas often prone to crime. "There's a lot of discussion on how best to police public housing communities," he says. "We are looking to use that model since we've had such good results with it in Cherry Hill."

But she maintained that the scalding was not a punishment for his behavior, saying that the apartment had hot water problems and that they routinely added boiled water to raise the bath temperature.

HOWEVER...
Drake's account of the April 12 crime was read aloud at the plea hearing and uncorrected in court by Lawson or her defense attorney.
She [Drake] said Lawson "forced [the boy] into a tub of water and poured five pots of boiling water into the tub. ... She pushed him into the water and threatened to beat him with a belt if he got out."

I don't even get how those two accounts can be in the same newspaper story, let along as a plea for sorrow and a stipulation of the facts in a courtroom. I can't even comment any further. What a terrible thing. She should have her teeth pulled out with a rusty hammer.
