At a guess, the increased visibility of gay issues in the media, plus the pushback from all the usual anti-gay religious and political groups, coupled with this being the start of the school year.
Also, in my unscientific opinion, what we're seeing is also the result of a greater willingness to bring this out into the open. In the past if a gay teen killed themselves it wasn't so much hushed up as the fact of their being gay, and being bullied to death because of it, as it was simply not spoken of. So these deaths remained purely isolated local tragedies. Parents didn't want to speak of their kid's homosexuality, and school administrators didn't want to fess up to the brutal atmosphere for gay kids in their schools.
This it seems, is changing. So I don't know if this is an increase in deaths or an increase in awareness of what is causing those deaths, but I would strongly suspect the latter.
