Indeed the Berrain brothers were not unknown to the civil or criminal justice system, with charges including armed robbery, assault, battery, drugs, domestic assault and failure to pay child support. For his part, at the time of his death Stowers was awaiting trial on drug charges, was found guilty of first-degree murder in 1993, was sentenced to 13 years, but was out by 2002 to face drug charges every few years since.

Officer Andrew Fitzgerald of Juvenile Booking was charged with assault and misconduct after allegedly punching a kid in the face.
