The Poor

Lots of comments on the "why are there poor people" poll.

I was just curious to know how many people blame poor people themselves. About one-fifth, it turns out!

Cybes, the gay marriage thing isn't really about the ring; it's about the privileges and responsibilities that go along with.

examples: joint tax returns, insurance coverage, social security survivorship, intestasy, etc.

Really? Because my marriage is all about the ring! When that ring comes off, I'm gambling our taxes on video poker at the mini mart! Hoot!

Insurance coverage, that's a big one. If a married gay couple lives in a state where marraige is legal, but the one with health insurance is employed by a company based in a state where there's an anti-marriage amendment, what happens?

And what if a couple marries in Massachusetts but they're living in MD right now and one of them dies intestate?

Not to play the devil's advocate - but what does that say about marriage requirements from state to state (for example, age)?

The biggest issue in all of this, to me at least, is righting the inequities in a contractual sense. The Federal government did a report more than five years ago and they discovered more tan 1,000 benefits which the United States Code permits for married couples that unmarried couples (be it glbt or straight) don't receive. Its critical to undo this since a same-sex couple doesn't even have an opportunity to step to the plate for these rights.

As for me, I humbly cite Jeb Freeman from 'The Boondocks' who says, "Well first of all, I think that all marriage is wrong..."

Everyone should have a "civil union" by law, that you get from living together for a certain amount of time. Why should you be able to get health insurance as someone's wife but not their roommate?

It always steamed me that my roommate and I had to pay $45 a month each for the gym but one married couple membership was $65. Same deal at the pool, you can add your husband to your "family membership," but not any other adult like your dad or sister.

People get punished for being single, even if they're doing everyone a favor by staying single.
