This just in: No extra drinkie on the weekend
Delegate Jill P Carter to her FB peeps: "HB 429 that would enable downtown bars to remain open until 4 a.m., Fri-Sun, has been Withdrawn. Opposition at this morning's delegation meeting was overwhelming! ................I'm totally in favor of the medical marijuana bill."

I don't think bars should close at 4AM. I don't think bars should close at 2AM. I think bars should never have to close.
That way the loud obnoxious alcoholics can settle into their favorite bar permanently and that way they will not be a bother to any neighborhood. All alcohol all the time, until you fall off your stool and die. Everyone wins.
I think a 4 AM closing time would actually be less obnoxious than 2 AM. When bars close at 2 everyone leaves at once. If they're open until 4 then people will trickle out over the course of the evening/early morning, and only the hardcore drinkers will remain until closing time. This means less of a rush of drunk bar patrons leaving at one time.
Well being a DJ in this city for 20 years I can tell you, without this law we simply do not compete on any level with any major city in the country. We simply have the worst nightlife there is in any major city in this country. Now to some of you that may seem like no big deal, but in the big picture it loses tons of revenue for everyone. No decent conventions, no new young professionals moving to the city, etc... You just can NOT build a big great city without a nightlife scene, and ours is absolutely pitiful. I'm not sure if any of you ever noticed but there are no nightclubs in this city (Power plant doesnt count that's for tourists and towson girls, and its far from being a nightclub area).
I get a lot of email from various sources. For some reason I am on the Federal Hill South Neighborhood association email list. They sent me an email on this bar hour extension matter. I quote from the email:
While the boundaries of this bill may not include your individual neighborhoods, we are opposed to such an expansion anywhere in our district."
I've become fascinated with statements that emanate from civic associations. I would like to know who the "we" is. Did the Federal Hill South neighborhood association take a vote at a general meeting where there was a quorum present? Or was this one person making a motion during a board meeting where their wife seconded it and then the board approved it with a show of hands?
The sad thing is that sometimes there are a very few people who believe that they represent the masses, and they write statements like the one listed above to their elected representatives. Their opinion may not represent the opinion of most people in their area. This is why perfectly good ideas get mowed down.
Last night 1:47AM, 2 drunks lying on the sidewalk in front of my house screaming as loud as the could. For the love of God extend those hours.
