He really was. We had many fine conversations-- I'd drop by and say hi and end up talking with him for hours about all kinds of stuff. He was always so generous with his time and his knowledge-- the smartest guy in the room but never lorded it over anyone, a rare person who could relate to people from all kinds of backgrounds and genuinely liked humanity in general, in spite of the horrific stories he heard every day. It is incredible how much pain he must have been in in his later years after that botched back operation, but he somehow was not bitter and soldiered on. I'll really miss him.
