I spoke to representatives from United Workers' Association, including Spanish speaking workers who were in the area of Broadway and Lombard this morning. At 11:30, unmarked cars rolled up to that corner in front of the 7-11 and rounded up Hispanic immigrants waiting for work there. At 10:30 the corner was full of people waiting for offers of work for the day ... Witnesses said the raid was carried out by 'Immigration,' presumably ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement, part of the Department of Homeland Security). There is no word yet if this was an isolated raid or part of a coordinated, multi-city effort. The Baltimore City Grand Jury has indicted Kevin White, 23, of the 4700 block of Ellison Avenue; Kevin Barnes, 20, of the 900 block of E. Lombard Street and Lennard Jones, 21 of the 900 block of Whitelock Street on first-degree murder and other counts. Court documents allege on December 26, 2006, the victim, Jose Hernandez, along with another male, were approached by three males as they walked away from the corner store in the 3200 block of East Baltimore Street. Two of the males produced knives and the other produced a handgun. Mr. Hernandez and the other man ran, gunshots were fired and the other man witnessed Mr. Hernandez fall to the ground. Mr. Hernandez died as a result of his injuries. The other man escaped without injuries. An arraignment is scheduled February 14, 2007, before Judge Gale E. Rasin.
Judge Allen L. Schwait sentenced Reginald McKever, 21, of the 4700 block of Ellson Avenue, to 50 years in prison today. A City jury convicted McKever November 3, 2006 of attempted first-degree murder, use of a handgun in the crime of violence and attempted robbery deadly weapon. Judge Schwait sentenced him to 30 years for the attempted murder and 20 years for the handgun count with the sentences to run consecutively. Judge Schwait also sentenced McKever to a concurrent 20 year prison term for the attempted robbery deadly weapon count. Say the facts,
On July 18, 2005 Baltimore Police Officer Kevin Simmons was off-duty when McKever and an unknown male approached him. McKever brandished a handgun and demanded money from Simmons. Officer Simmons, fearing what might happen if the defendant got his service weapon, attempted to flea from the defendant while announcing that he was a police officer. McKever shot Officer Simmons one time, striking him in the foot, and then fled the scene.A jury acquitted Jemini Jones of all charges.
No bail for Brandon Grimes.
Carroll County's one homicide of 2006 was Rylee Emge, age three months, a victim of shaken-baby syndrome. His father has been charged.
Silver Spring has bought itself a $7.7 million bridge that's now "a perfect place for a crime."
Examinertorial re. the Robert Clay case: "Every reason given for secrecy [by the police department] is specious."
If you've been groped, assaulted or forced to watch porn with the pervert at left, Fabrice Snowden, please call Baltimore County Police.

FYI, before acquitting Jemini Jones, the jury asked the judge if they had to explain the reason for their verdict. He answered "No." before they returned to sequestration.
I just figured it out!
John Galt = Julie Bykowicz!
This case was in front of Judge Wanda Heard (female judge).
Ok... went to court this morning...
The CID officer i spoke to told Judge Lynne k Stewart that i WAS NOT HARRASSED so she didn't even question me.... I called him and he said that i was not harrassed.
I asked him if havin a cop 6 inches from your face and another behind him would make him back up into his house, or if being told I hadn't seen my door pushed in yet or that they didn't want to hear my bullshit qualify as unprofessional at the least. he claimed since I did open my door {only because Puff the magic witness slayer} was in my face it was not. Then he told me they were attempting to serve my husband a subpoena/summons. Funny thing about that is, THE FUCKING SUMMONS WAS JUST ISSUED TODAY TO MY HUBBY BY THE JUDGE.
I HATE crooked ass cops and I hope that they all spend eternity in a jail cell with a sodomizing 7-foot well hung man with a hell of a knock out punch. I'm pissed and I swear this is far from over.
I even knocked on the door to judges chambers before court came back from lunch and was told to make an appointment even though i stated it was regarding the case she was currently hearing.
I swear i have no faith in the justice or police system at this moment. i refuse to let this go so easily.
What's the deal with this immigration raid? The guys hanging around 7-11 at Broadway and Lombard?
This media is typical liberal media. It focuses on the never, at the total exclusion of the positive. The murder rate has declined again, from .95 per day to something like .90-.93 per day.
liz, that sucks. if all else fails, call anna ditkoff and see if she'll try to get something about this written up in "mobtown beat" or whatever. the examiner seems to like stories about cops fucking with law-abiding citizens too. if the authorities who are supposed to be helping you won't listen then i figure you might as well try to stir up some media controversy about it.
i can't believe in 2007 morons are still complaining about the "liberal media." also, are you being sarcastic about our "murder rate declining?" if not, i don't understand your point, are we supposed to be happy that ONLY five people have been killed in the past week? you don't recalculate the murder rate every day in order to determine if you're making progress because the daily frequency is totally coincidental, you need a much longer sampling time.
I think that was sarcasm, Burg...
Deep breaths...

They reported that "24 people were confirmed arrested." I have not personally confirmed this number, but I rode down to the corner and saw a press conference by the UWA, Casa de Maryland and other organizations announcing the arrests and condemning them as attacks on people just trying to make a living.
At least 3 television news outlets were reporting from the corner, including CBS and Channel 2. Witnesses said the raid was carried out by "Immigration" presumably ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement, part of the Department of Homeland Security). The United Workers Association is a human rights organization that organizes low wage workers and builds leadership from their ranks with the goal of ending poverty. The mission of the organization takes inspiration from the Poor Peoples' Campaign of 1968. Martin Luther King was killed on a stop of this campaign as he fought side-by-side with striking sanitation workers.
sarcasm doesn't translate well on the internet.
what are they putting in the water in the 4700 block of ellison avenue?
oh also wjz just said that jemini jones will be facing some more rape charges in a later trial from a different incident, and that the jury in this trial was not told about those pending charges.
Wow JJ innocent! Wonder who messed that case up, the ASA or the police investigating one of their own? Maybe it was a lack of convincing evidence? Too bad there's a gag order.
On La Inmigracion, I don't see the problem.
I believe in rational targetting.
I don't want Homeland Security wasting time looking for Al Qaeda among Swedes, Swiss, or Han Chinese. They're not there. Similarly, illegal immigrants are going to be in the Latino community, largely.
Remember, sovereign governments DO get to regulate their borders. Foreigners do not have a RIGHT to get work here, although I personally think they tend to make good legal additions to our population. Guys, these raids happen in Chinatowns all the time. It's ok.
Liz, understand what CID's mission is: to find corruption which jeopardizes police ops. I have had this same experience of identifying noncorrupt police misconduct and having them express utter disinterest, because they cannot score a crooked cop.
I was outraged, but after I thought about it, I realized there really doesn't seem to be anyone responsible for ensuring 'good' conduct by these cops, some of whom are arrogant, others of whom are stupid. Many are poorly trained.
We probably need some independent investigator/prosecutor who's looking out for the public, rather than the department.
galt, you're thinking of IID (internal investigative division). CID is criminal investigative division, which is all the detectives (homicide, auto theft, missing persons, narcotics, and whatnot).
DAMN! I hope my neighbors are ok. They are good people. very nice, very hospitable and very cool. Pfft.
Burger, i sent a lengthy email to Anna Ditkoff, The CP editor, and Julie Bykowicz. Hopefully one of them will help me on this.
It seems like unfortunately, ever since my brother's passing, I feel like I'm in a neverending bad episode of law and order.
Where is Jack McCoy when I need him?
CASA's whining about the immigration raid and racial profiling was pretty obnoxious. According to ICE:
"Of the 24 suspected illegal immigrants detained by authorities, Raimondi said, six men had criminal records, three had final judges' orders of removal from the county, and eight men previously had been physically removed from the country, including one who had been caught at the border six times."
Sounds like some good law enforcement work to me.
I heard a story that Patricia Jessamy fired two detectives on her protection team because they publicly congratulated Jemini Jones after he was found innocent. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?
